Thomas Scott Muhn

Our patriarch and much loved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Friday, July 31, 2015 peacefully in his Salt Lake City home, surrounded by his loved ones. He courageously fought a battle with cancer and though he was called home earlier than expected, our hearts swell with love and peace knowing he has been reunited with family and is in the arms of the Savior. Scott was born in Boulder, Colorado on May 20, 1944 to Richard Thornton Muhn and Eleanor Ann Scott. His older sister Joann (Kearns) welcomed him readily and loved him dearly. While growing up in Boulder his life consisted of kayaking, SCUBA diving,fishing,archery, hiking, camping, bowling, golfing, playing the harmonica, and skiing. In high school, he petitioned and became a member of the Colorado University Flying club and got his pilot's license at age 15 before he got his driver's license. He later owned his own plane a Mooney Mite M18. After graduating from Boulder High School he attended the University of Coloradoand in 1963enlisted in theUnited StatesAir Force, serving in the Vietnam War assigned to counter intelligence with top secret clearance. While stationed in Okinawa and waiting out a typhoon, Scott asked a fellow enlistee what church he belonged to. He was in search of the truth and little did he know the life changing affect this would have on his life and that of his future generations. After being presented with an Articles of Faith card, he was instantly blessed with the light and truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which penetrated his heart and soul and he vowed right then and there to become a member of the church. He had to wait until he was state-side where he sought out the missionaries and upon being taught the gospel he immediately joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he would remain a faithful, devoted member throughout his life and into the eternities. In 1967,Scott was honorably discharged from the military. Immediately following, he returned to Boulder where he attended Colorado Aero Tech to obtain his Air Frame and Powerplant License. While attending a young single adultswim party he met his future eternal companion, Janet SuzaineHewett.He caught her eye and impressed her with his diving skills. They were married on August 2nd, 1969 in Boulder, Colorado and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple two days later. After getting married Scott attended the University of Colorado and then transferred to Brigham Young University wherehe would graduate with his Bachelor of Sciencein Electrical Engineering.While attending school in Colorado their first daughter Alisawas born.After graduatingin 1972they moved to Ridgecrest, Californiaand within two months their first sonRichard was born. Scott would work for the Naval Weapons Center for the next 25 years in top secret intelligence, designing, testing and installing tactical intelligence systems on US and NATO installations and platforms. Over the course of the next 9 years they would welcome 6 more children into their family.Heidiwas bornandfollowedone year laterbyChristina-both girls died in infancy. Receiving personal revelation, they were able to overcomeand in the next 6 years they would welcome three more children, Samuel, Cheriseand Jefferson. Their hearts felt so complete. Much to their surprise they would welcome in a fosterdaughter, Nina,and later have her sealed to their family.He loved his family dearly, fixing the car to take them on family vacations, documenting milestonesbehind the video camera, and bringingbacktreasuresfrom histravels abroad.Later, he and Janet traversed the countryvisitingtheir friends and family. He loved his Scottish heritage and hisheart swelled whenever he heardbagpipesplay. During Scott's life heheldmany church assignments including Bishop of the Ridgecrest, California 4thWard, and served as shift coordinatorin the Los Angeles temple,went on two missions-serving inthe Zimbabwe, Harare Mission Presidency and as Assistant Recorder for the Halifax, Nova Scotia Temple.Scott had a brilliant mind and was an inventor, always working to make life better for those around him. He will be remembered for his unwavering testimony as a faithful, committed disciple of Jesus Christ, his wise teachings, his love for proper health, genealogy work, his ability to fix anything and his insatiable desire for learning, but most importantly for his love of family and his deep and abiding testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ. His life was spent in service to his family and his fellow man. May God be with you until we meet again. He was greeted in Heaven byhis parents,Eleanor Ann Scott Muhn & RichardThornton Muhn; father-in-law Marvin Hewett; brother-in-law ThomasKearns;sister-in-law Constance Lorene Hewett;daughters Heidi Susanne&Christina LoreneMuhn; granddaughter HayleyMuhn; and grandson Michael Muhn. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 7, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at the Northpoint 3rd Ward LDS Church, 1460 North Morton Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Viewings will be held Thursday, August 6th, 6-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and Friday at the church, 10-10:45 a.m. Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 South Redwood Road, Bluffdale, Utah.
