Arnold, known as Arnie, passed away peacefully from this earth on Friday, September 8, 2023. He was an unassuming, gentle, and compassionate man. He was born December 9, 1935 in Ogden, Utah to Elinor Linford and Rodney Watkins Schaer. He was the youngest of three children, following his two older sisters, Shirley and Carol. His parents often took the family for drives and picnics. He loved to be outdoors camping and hiking. He taught himself to fish and his cousins taught him to hunt; both hobbies he greatly enjoyed during his life. He always loved spending time with his extended family that lived nearby. His father owned a foundry in Ogden where Arnie often helped.
Arnie attended Ogden High School until Ben Lomond High School opened, ultimately joining its first graduating class. He attended Utah State University, and later graduated from the University of Utah in Mechanical Engineering. He also served with the Army Reserve and was stationed for a time at Fort Lewis, Washington.
While in high school, Arnold met LaNae Weir. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. While attending school at USU they began their family, starting with a son (Duane). They eventually moved to North Salt Lake where they purchased their home and had two more children (Kevin and Charlene). Arnie and LaNae enjoyed raising their family in the outdoors; camping, hunting, and fishing. He generously provided compassionate service for LaNae during a lengthy illness until her passing.
Arnie was later sealed to Cherie Hale in the Salt Lake Temple. They shared new adventures together traveling and attending various cultural events. Cherie took on a new family of teenagers, and a young adult, with amazing love and support. After a few years their marriage came to an end, but they held each other in high esteem and remained friends.
Mette Hansen came into Arnie's life and they were sealed in the Manti Temple. They made their home in West Valley City. This union brought three additional children into his life (Sander, Anne-Mette, and Elisabeth) along with many grandchildren. Arnie was a loving father to Elisabeth during her high school years. He and Mette enjoyed going to plays, taking rides, camping, and traveling. He provided tender care to Mette until her passing.
Arnie worked for many years as a mechanical engineer with various companies. He loved working on commercial airplanes, aviation navigation, military vehicles, missile systems, medical machines, and various jobs to help support his family.
A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he always loved to serve the Lord and those around him. He diligently served in various callings over the years. Sometimes spending hours to be sure everything was just right. He loved working in the scouting program with the young men and helping them on their trail to Eagle.
His family includes his children; Duane (Cindy) Schaer, Kevin (Dorothy) Schaer, Charlene (Kelly) Gibbs, as well as Mette's children; Sander Lund, Anne-Mette Howland, Elisabeth (Keith) Taufer. Together, Arnie and Mette share a total 26 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Arnie's amazing ward, neighbors, and friends for their love and support over the years. A special thanks is also given to Dignity Hospice for their incredible care and kindness.
We are so grateful for Arnie's influence in our lives. He was an example of service and love. He will be greatly missed until we meet again.
