Arvel Carleton (Carl) Reese "Carl" Arvel Carleton Reese, 75, died unexpectedly on Feb. 5, 2014, in West Valley City, Utah. Carl was born April 20, 1938, in Logan, Utah, a son of Arvel Charles and Gene Heninger Reese and a grandson of Utah pioneers. He grew up on a dairy farm in Benson and graduated from Utah State University. After serving a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the West Central States Mission, he married Helen Kay Hanson in the Logan Temple on Aug. 11, 1964. She survives him, as do their three daughters and their husbands: Catherine Reese Newton (Brent), Karen Ashman (Jim), and Carolyn Richards (Dan); eight grandchildren: Naomi, Adam, Mary and Jonah Newton, Michael and Kate Ashman, and Xavier and Olivia Sosa; and siblings: Mona Bunting (Shirl), Merilyn Parkin (Darrell), Linda Gillette (Perry), Kent Reese (Barta) and Louise Peterson (Martin). Carl lived a life rich in service and friendship. He served his country honorably, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam and retiring as a major in the United States Army. He served his church in many capacities, most notably as ward organist. He found great joy in serving with his wife at the Jordan River Temple baptistry, where he was a shift supervisor at the time of his death. He served his community as a generous neighbor and friend, often bearing gifts of tomatoes, peaches or tulips from his garden. A meticulous record-keeper, Carl had a magisterial knowledge of American cars, the Disneyland resort and Utah ZIP codes. He worked at many occupations, including chemistry teacher, ROTC instructor, metallurgist, letter carrier and postal clerk, but his favorites were husband, father and grandfather. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at the Jordan North 6th Ward, 3836 W. 4100 South, West Valley City, with Bishop Jeff Hansen conducting. Visitation will be at the ward meetinghouse from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 and an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the LDS Church's General Missionary Fund or Temple Patron Assistance Fund. Arrangements under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.
