Audrey Rigby Sweeny

April 6, 1916 — December 14, 2015

Audrey Rigby Sweeny, 99, passed away peacefully at her home in Taylorsville, Utah, on 14 December, surrounded by her family. She had always been remarkably healthy, but her heart finally gave out. She was born on 6 April 1916 in Newton, Utah, to George Amos and Anna Christina Christensen Rigby, spent her youth in Idaho, most of her married years in southern California, and her widowhood in Utah. She married Keith Holcomb Sweeny at her parents' home in Bancroft, Idaho, on 11 March 1945, and a year later they moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where Keith completed his Ph.D., after which they lived in West Covina, California until Keith died in 1989. After Keith's death she moved to her home in Taylorsville. Audrey was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in church and community in many ways, beginning with missionary service to Toronto, Canada 1937-39, instructor and president in Relief Society and Primary, president of the West Covina (California) Women's Club, leader in cub scouts, and before her marriage taught school for three years in Idaho and worked for a year at a factory in California. She attended Utah State University and graduated from BYU (B.A. in English). In fact, she and both of her sisters obtained Bachelors degrees, unusual for the time, thanks to their schoolteacher mother. Audrey was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed family history, playing games of all kinds with friends and family, doing things with her sisters, was a voracious reader, and traveled extensively with her husband and children. Everyone loved her sense of humor. She really enjoyed the people she met and could talk with pleasure with anyone and she will be missed very much by her family and many friends. She is survived by her three children, Brent (Carolyn) of Bloomington, Indiana; Richard (Wendy) of West Valley City; and Katherine Hicks (Don) of Taylorsville; 12 of her 15 grandchildren; and 31 great-grand-children. Preceded in death by her parents and siblings. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2015, 10:00 a.m., at Jordan 4th Ward, 4700 South 3676 West. Viewings will be held Friday, December 18, 6-8:00 p.m., at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and Saturday at the church, 9-9:45 a.m. Interment, Bancroft Cemetery, Bancroft, Idaho.
