Sergeant Bennie Paul Shoemaker Jr. passed away at his home of 9 years, Midtown Manor, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on December 4, 2023. Bennie was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on November 18, 1948, to Bennie Paul Sr. and Helen Marie Dale Shoemaker. He grew up in Pennsylvania surrounded by family including his siblings: the late Kathy A. Hevner, David W. Shoemaker, and Jared A. Shoemaker.
Bennie was considered a "Career Soldier" and served in the U.S. Airforce for a combined total of 18 years. He was an Automatic Flight Control Specialist Mechanic and served during the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his service and had a deep love for his Country and other Veterans. He worked with the Wounded Warrior Project and was always looking for ways to help others and be of service.
Bennie had a love of Barbering and Cosmetology, which became his civilian career after his Military service. He was also passionate about many activities and hobbies including scuba diving, camping, fishing, hiking, and biking. He was a Life Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
Growing up in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, on the Susquehanna River, instilled in him a lifelong love of nature. This love of the outdoors eventually led him to settle in Utah where he could be surrounded by the mountains he loved.
Bennie's love of nature extended out to all animal life. He would never turn down the opportunity to help another living creature. He had an extra special place in his heart for cats and spent the last years of his life caring for both his pet cats and any strays that might be in need. He even fed the neighborhood racoons when he could.
Bennie was a real-life Santa Claus. He had a hearty, jovial laugh, a white beard, and could often be heard "Ho-Ho-Ho"-ing and discussing his magic reindeer. He brought joy to children and adults alike with his permanent Christmas spirit, and genuine kindness. He was a true Christian in both belief and action. Though it is hard to lose our "Santa" during this season, it is also appropriate. His Christ-like love for others reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas and encourages us to honor it.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 13, at 11:00 am, at the Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah. Memories and stories of Bennie will be shared at Midtown Manor later that same day. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bennie's honor to The Wounded Warrior Project: www.woundedwarriorproject.com . We would also like to thank all the staff at Midtown Manor for giving Bennie a loving home and family for the last 9 years. Thank you!
