Bernell Ward Evans

Bernell Ward Evans passed away peacefully at his home on June 14, 2015. He was born February 7, 1923 in Parowan, Utah to William Leonard Evans and Anne Alberta Ward the fourth of six children. Bernell graduated from Parowan High School and began studying at Utah State University in Logan, UT, until he was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. Bernell was sent to the European Theatre as an artillery gunmen. He soon found himself on Omaha Beach shortly after the initial D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star for entering a minefield to save a wounded comrade. Bernell was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Upon his return from WWII, he was called to return to France as a missionary. Following his mission, he began classes at the Branch Agriculture College (SUU) in Cedar City, UT where he earned a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. While attending the BAC, Bernell met his eternal companion H. Maxine Hunter. On September 1, 1949 they were married in the Salt Lake Temple and settled in Parowan where they had four children. In 1957 they moved to Granger, UT (WVC). Bernell spent the greater part of his career teaching children with learning disabilities at West Lake Junior High. He was a wonderful teacher who was able to help his students understand that they were not defined by their challenges and with hard work and perseverance, they could succeed. He was blessed with a very fulfilling career and life. Bernell had a very strong testimony of the the restored gospel. Even up until the time of his passing, he was serving as a member missionary to the wonderful hospice staff who helped make it possible for him to stay in his home the past few months. His life was centered around serving those around him. He was always concerned with the welfare of others, especially his family. He worked very hard to make sure he could provide for, and protect, his family. Bernell is preceded in death by his wife, parents, siblings, two sons Lynn and Gaylen, and son-in-laws Mark Fisher and Wally Crosby. He is survived by his daughters Shari Crosby Fisher and Jackie Holt (Scott), 10 grandchildren, Ryan, Donelle, Kristin, Amy, Brad, Tiffanie, Casi, Monica, Levi, Russell, and 27 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held Thursday, June 18, 2015, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S Redwood Rd. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at the Taylorsville 4th Ward, 4310 S. 3200 W. where a viewing will be held, 9:30 10:15 am.
