Berniece Ann Grotegut Goodell Scarlet passed away early in the morning of April 26, 2021. Berniece was born on April 7, 1937 to Reed Simeon Grotegut and Vivian Marie Olson in Spanish Fork, Utah.
She graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in Home Economics and stayed True Blue to BYU her entire life. She made a career in education. She taught Home Economics, Typing, Math and Adult Education at Roosevelt Junior High for nine years. After taking a break she returned to teaching in 1978; she needed one more year to be eligible for retirement. The one year turned in 18 years of teaching at Grantsville High School. She taught all the Business classes offered.
During her break from teaching, Berniece was the Food Service Manager and Menu Consultant for the Lion House. During this time, she organized and designed the first Lion House Cookbook.
She was a world traveler. She started while attending BYU. Berniece has visited every country in the world.
Berniece was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a life-long learner of the Gospel and Scriptures. She took every Religion Class offered at BYU. She attended every Institute Class offered. Her favorite Institute Instructor was David A. Christensen. She attended her first Temple Session in Manti in April 1966. This was the beginning of her love of the Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was able to travel the world and attend Temples. She attended Sessions in 122 different Temples.
Berniece met her first husband, Jerry Thomas Goodell in 1976, while working in the Salt Lake Temple. He passed away in 1983. In 1987 a neighbor, Eve Cook, introduced Berniece to Clifford James Scarlet, a widower of her close friend. On April 13, 1988 Berniece and Cliff were married for Time in the Salt Lake Temple. Their marriage was latter solemnized in the Jordan River Temple, October 9, 2020.
Together they built a dream home in Taylorsville. They spent many happy years there. Eternal friendships were made with the members of the Taylorsville 30th Ward.
COVID-19 allowed Berniece to accomplish writing a detailed personal history, which her family will greatly cherish for years to come. The pandemic also allowed her niece Jackie and stepdaughter Cora to provide many hours of service keeping her safe.
Berniece is preceded by her parents; Geraldine Lassen, sister; Richard Lassen, nephew; Gerry, husband; Clifford, husband; George Scarlet, stepson; and Susan Scarlet Schmidt, stepdaughter.
She is survived by Clinton (Gayle) Grotegut, brother; Jacqueline (Mark) Radmall, niece; Joanie (Scott) Burningham, niece; Jackie (Dick) Nelson, stepdaughter; Janet Scarlet Riggs, stepdaughter; Sonny Schmidt, stepson-in-law; Cora Scarlet (Patrick) Ring, stepdaughter; 13 great-nieces and nephews; many step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren.
A brief immediate family gathering will be held Saturday May 1st from 11-12 pm at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Rd, Taylorsville, Utah. A Graveside Service will be held at the Provo City Cemetery on the same day starting at 1 pm.
Berniece, we want you to know we all love you and will miss you. Thank you for your influence in this life- see you in the Eternities.
