Beulah Amy Campbell Carr

One hundred and sixty-nine years ago, the Pioneers prepared to enter the Salt Lake Valley. On the morning of July 23, 2016, our mother and grandmother, Beulah A. Carr, passed from her earthly existence and returned to her Heavenly Father. Grandma was a pioneer, and like those who crossed the plains had her trials, but was quick to praise our Heavenly Father. Many of her talents were learned by trial. She was a creator and a true purveyor of chocolate making, teaching a few and sharing her efforts with many. Simplicity was not a byword, but a rule of real life. Grandma loved the outdoors, puttering in her yard, trimming roses and growing tomatoes and vegetables. A zucchini was delicacy and she was always happy to get the first fresh tomato. Believe it or not, grandma was well known by family members to be handy with a chain saw and could take out a tree with no problem. Noone could run faster than Beulah when she was behind her "Devil Lawnmower." Grandma loved car rides and could tell endless stories of going to Storm Mountain in her youth with the Mutual kids. On one occasion, as Beulah told the story, "We slid down the rocks so many times, I wore the seat right out of my pants." I was born in Emery, Utah, on November 13, 1928, to Thomas Campbell and Effie Johanna Christiansen. We moved to Salt Lake City and lived in the neighborhood of 700 East and Cottage Avenue. I attended Hamilton and Roosevelt Schools and graduated from South High School. From the age of three, I have had a very close friend in Phyllis Olmstead McGrath. There were very few days gone by that we didn't talk or visit, comparing notes, giving and taking council and just good chit-chat. A highlight in my life is when I sat with Phyllis's family, in the Jordan River Temple, and witnessed her eternal marriage to Boyd. My mother had 11 children, with three brothers: Doyle, Johnni and Daniel having passed away. Our Bishop at the time of Daniel's graduating from Primary was the father of President Gordon B. Hinckley. We often tended the siblings of Elder Mark E. Petersen. Two sisters, Ellen and Valda, have also passed away, with Josephine Smith being the sole survivor of our family. I have worked at Lynn Wilson Products, when it was Lynn Wilsons, United Airlines and for Western Foods. I am grateful for the many friends from working together. There are too many names to mention, but a person well know to my family is another Phyllis. My grandkids affectionately call her Tall Phyllis, because she is taller than Little Phyllis, also having a heart of gold, giving of herself Following World War II, I fell in love with Albert L. Carr, and was married in 1947. We are the parents of four children: Doyle (Joyce), Debi (George) Baldwin, Richard (Janet), and Tim - our Desert Mustang, who passed away during the 2002 Olympics. We have six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Al has passed away and has been preparing my place to continue eternal life, free from pain and being able to see and hear. We were sealed in the Jordan River Temple in 1995. As Grandma Carr's health began to slow, she ended her service as an active temple worker, of more than 10 years, in the Jordan River Temple, often attending weekly. She also served for more than six years at the LDS Conference Center as a guide. She was an active member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Beulah lived at her residence in Taylorsville, just a few days short of 40 years. There are endless friends, hundreds of Primary kids and good down -to-earth people that have made life complete. Someday we will meet again. Life is too precious to waste. Here are grandma's famous words, "If you chance to meet a frown, do not let it stay. Quickly turn it upside down and smile that frown away." (Lyrics by Daniel Taylor) The hands were feeble as Grandma passed, but we know that those hands became "like those from Galilee." Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, Valley Park LDS 1st Ward, 4986 South Valois Drive (2360 West). Viewings will from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment - Redwood Memorial Estates.
