Buster Shin Sano was born Tuesday, January 26th, 1935 in Vacaville, California to Yoshitaka and Masako Sano. He was the sixth of eight children and spent his early childhood years on a farm in Vacaville. In 1942, his family was relocated during the Second World War to Gila River interment camp in Arizona. After the war, in 1945, Buster returned with his family to California, ending up in the Sacramento valley.
After high school, in 1954, Buster enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1962. He also attended UC Berkley and Sacramento State as well as traveled the world on the back of his motorcycle. Buster worked as a computer programmer for the state of California, including positions at the DMV, the highway patrol, and the Chancellor's office. While working at the DMV, he met Mary Wallace, who became his wife and lifelong partner. February 1st, 2025 marked their 61st anniversary.
In 2006, Buster and his grandson were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he was very active in his church community. Throughout his life, Buster coached little league baseball and ward basketball. He loved to travel and do projects around the house. He was admired by all who met him with his easy smile and loving nature.
Family was very important to Buster, and he spent as much time with them as he could, especially after retirement. At the age of 80, he and Mary sold their California home and moved to West Jordan, Utah, to be near their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Two days after his 90th birthday, Buster passed away peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sano; son, D. Christopher Sano; grandchildren, Bambie and Joshua Childs, Emily Sano, Shin and Heather Sano, Sean and Lisa Sano; and his eight great-grandchildren.
