Cloyd "Bud" Dale Petersen, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Kearns on Saturday, December 23, 2017. Bud was born on August 28, 1929 to Clyde and Louetta (Hatt) Petersen in South Jordan, Utah. As a child, Bud was known for his antics with his brother Max. As Bud said himself, "Max would get things started and I would finish it!" Such as the time Max and some friends painted Bud green from head to toe until his mother caught him running around with nothing but a belt on. As a child, and even into adult hood, he had a desire to be a sportscaster for baseball games, but he was too shy. It did not stop him from using a stick or a belt to practice calling ball games! Bud graduated from Jordan High School in 1947. In 1951, Bud was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a medic and assistant cook during the Korean War. After returning from the Army in 1954, he met the love of his life, JoLayne (Kay) Petersen. They wed on January 24, 1955; later solemnized in the Manti Temple in 1962. Together, Bud and JoLayne had two sons, Kelly & Jeff and one daughter, Lisa. Bud worked at the Kennecott Smelter briefly before his time in the Army up until he retired in 1985. He began work as a crossing guard for nearby elementary schools shortly after retirement from the smelter. He worked as a crossing guard for 28 years. Bud loved having responsibility, thus his passion for being a crossing guard, his enjoyment for the several callings he held at the LDS church over the years, and his volunteer work at the Kearns Senior Center. Bud will forever be known as a light-hearted man. He could find the fun in any situation and could always be counted upon for a good laugh. He especially loved socializing and his time spent with other people. Bud is survived by his 3 children Kelly (Lenee), Jeff (Lori), and Lisa (Chris); 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters Marilyn Fitzgerald and Oneita Simmons; brother-in-law Jim Mecham; and sister-in- law Pauline Petersen. He was preceded in death by his wife JoLayne; parents Clyde and Louetta; brother Max Petersen; sister Loudean Mecham; and brother-in- laws Ken Simmons and Jack Fitzgerald. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Kearns 10th Ward, 5025 West 4865 South. Viewings will be held Tuesday, Jan. 2nd, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Wednesday at the church, 10-10:45 a.m. Interment, South Jordan City Cemetery, 10618 S. 1055 W.
