Dee was born on October 18, 1927 to Twiss Roper and Edgar Nielson in Oak City, Utah. He was the last of seven children and loved growing up on their farm, working, playing and being surrounded by family and friends.

He moved to Salt Lake City in March of 1955 where he met his beloved wife, Ruth Forsgren. They were married on August 10, 1956 in the Logan Temple. After many years trying to have children, they adopted a baby girl and named her Sharlynn Adria Nielson. Twenty-two months later, they adopted a baby boy and named him Sheldon Forsgren Nielson.
Dee worked a few jobs until September 1959 when he went to work for Hercules and retired at age 62. He took care of his wife for many years when she was in a wheelchair and then cancer. He served for 22 years as Ward Clerk with several callings in between. He loved the Savior and the church and very true to his beliefs. He was an extremely peaceful man and loved by many.
