Denton A Haueter

April 28, 1923 — February 2, 2018

"Grizz" "How are you today, Denton?" "Mean and ornery, just like an old grizzly bear!" So often we heard this good-humored refrain from our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, uncle and mentor. His growl was fierce, but his heart was kind. Our grizzly bear passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 2, 2018. Denton was born on April 28, 1923 in Park City, UT to Albert and Minie TIllery Haueter. He grew up in Taylorsville and graduated from Granite High School, after which he served honorably as an army engineer from 1942-1946 in the Pacific theater during World War II. He married Norma Rupp on December 29, 1947. They were later sealed in the temple. They had 31 happy years together before she died on April 27, 1980. He has stayed close to and loves the Rupp family after all of these years. They still love, admire and respect him. Denton married Alice Jeanne Taylor on August 6, 1987 in the Salt Lake Temple. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in 2017. Denton loved the outdoors and never passed up the chance for a thrilling adventure. He felt at home in the mountains, where he enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, backpacking, and camping. He loved the Scouting program, and served as a Scout Master for 32 years. As a leader, mentor, and dear friend to his Scouts, he taught them the value of work, faith in God, perseverance, and patriotism. Recognizing his outstanding service, the Boy Scouts of America awarded him the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in 1978 and, in 2015, Denton was honored as the "James E. West Fellow" of the Great Salt Lake Council. While Denton was not working as a heavy equipment operator at Kennecott, he was serving the members of his church and community. No matter the problem, Denton could fix it. A handy man and a gentle soul, his service to his friends and family meant the world to them. He was an active member of the LDS church throughout his life, and steadfastly served as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple for nine years. He attended the temple weekly with his sweetheart, Alice, to participate in sealings for 25 years in the Jordan River and Draper Temples. Most of all, Denton loved his family. He was a devoted husband. He loved his wife, Alice, very much and they were so happy together. He loved being a father, grandfather and great grandfather. One of his greatest joys was being a dad and a grandpa. He is survived by his cherished wife, Alice; and their children and posterity: Debbie (Duff), Steve (Vickie), Lori (Ed), Julie (Spencer), Allison (Rob), and Katie (John); 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Don. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Norma; and his sisters, June and Afton. Dearly beloved by his family, Denton will be sorely missed. He was our rockever-present to give aid, love, encouragement, and support, no matter the situation. He was often spotted cheering on his grandkids at sports games and dance performances. He was there for each and every one of us in our hour of need, no matter great or small. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, 12:00 pm at the River View LDS Chapel, 288 W. River Chapel Rd (11620 South)., Draper, where a viewing will be held beforehand at the same location from 9:00 to 11:30 am. Interment will be at the Taylorsville Cemetery.
