Donald Rudolph Baumann

December 15, 1931 — February 1, 2017

Our beloved Donald Rudolph Baumann, sweetly passed away on February 1, 2017. He was born in West New York, New Jersey on December 15, 1931 to Herman Joseph and Gertrude Doeg Baumann. Don's childhood shared with his brother Herm was spent in Louisville Kentucky where they joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Baumann's moved to Utah during WWII. Don attended South High School where he played on the state championship baseball team. He later attended the U of U and won all of his starts as a pitcher. He was a talented, cerebral pitcher with an unhittable fastball. He pitched in semi-professional games locally and was courted by minor league scouts, one from his dear Yankees. Ultimately he chose God and family over baseball. He loved hunting and fishing with his dad and brother Herman Jr. and carried on those traditions with his sons and grandsons. Don met the love of his life, Myrna Grace Coates, in SLC and they were sealed for eternity Feb. 9, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple. Don and Myrna raised 6 children. Don was well known for his quality work , generosity and integrity in his family run Baumann heating business and later as he worked for the LDS church as a mechanic and PM supervisor. He was a master sheet metal worker as well as a jack of all trades that could build and/or fix almost anything. He was humble, kind, meek, generous, grateful, loyal, forgiving, without guile and always gave inspired counsel and advice with unconditional love. Don's life was one of service to kindly lift and help others in a variety of capacities. Don loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully and diligently in many, many callings. His greatest calling and work was as a husband, father and grandfather. He lovingly and tenderly cared for his wife during their 60 years of marriage. His greatest joy was to support his children and grandchildren in any way possible. He is survived by his children Steven (Sherri), David (Mindi), Matthew (Janiece), Linda (Kevin), Dianne (Gary); grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife; his son Donald Russel; his parents; and brother. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 6, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at Taylorsville 4th Ward, 4310 South 3200 West. Viewings will be held Sunday, February 5th, 5:30-8:00 p.m., at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and again prior to services at the church from 9:30-10:40 a.m. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park.
