On January 2, 2016, Doris J Givens passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born on January 16,1930 in Paris, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents Rosetta and Bennie VanZandt ,(brothers) Lewis, Lonnie, (sisters) Willie Bea, Irma, Maxine, and Tommie, and her loving husband Melvin A. Givens. Doris married Rev. Melvin A Givens Jr, the love of her life and lifelong soulmate, on August 20,1960 in Tulsa,Oklahoma, lovingly adding his four sons to her family. Melvin (Anita), Donald (Wenda), Clyde (Donna), and Victor (deceased). Together they added, Charles (Jan), Jackie, Steve (JoAn), Dionne (Adam) Watson. From these children came 23 grandchildren and a growing number of great grandchildren. She was a dedicated sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister in Christ. She has enjoyed her nieces and nephews and their close and loving relationships. She loved the calls and letters she received from family, and the opportunity to meet with family and love them in person this past fall. In life she was also a tireless worker in the church and an amazing soloist. She was an ambassador for Christ and example of a Christian mother who centered her life in honoring God and loving her family. She is, and will be sorely missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. We want to extend special thanks to Dr. Saundra Buys and the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. And we also give special thanks to the staff at the Rocky Mountain Hospice for the excellent care and support that was given to our mother and us. While these days have been difficult, our hearts have been lifted and are filled with gratitude for having shared a life well lived. II Corinthians 5:20-21 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: We pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Friends and family are welcome to come to the McDougal Mortuary, 4330 Redwood Road, on January 8th at 6-8PM for viewing and celebration of her life. A second viewing will be held Saturday at 10:30-11:30 am with a Graveside Service following at noon at the Redwood Memorial park located at 6500 S Redwood.
