Douglas Kent McLelland, 71, of West Valley, UT, passed away on July 13, 2023.
He was a very loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. Douglas had a strong faith in Christ and dedicated his life to serving both his church and his fellow man. He also had a deep love for his country and held a testimony of the Atonement.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Irene McLelland, his brother & sister in law Tom & Linda McLelland, brother in law and sister in law Howard & Kathy Reed, his brothers-in-law Narvel Scherzinger, and sister in law Julie Christensen his sons and daughters in law Aurthur & Jennifer McLelland, Eldgen & Nicole McLelland, Milton & Rochelle McLelland, Edward & Ileah McLelland, his daughter and son in law Kathrene & Timothy Livingston. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren. Douglas was preceded in death by his father Kent Thomas McLelland, his mother Doris Jacobsen McLelland, his sister Jerrrilyn Reed, his sister Janice Scherzinger, his grandson Joseph McLelland, and his granddaughters Tabatha McLelland and Isabel McLelland.
Douglas attended Skyline High School and later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Utah. He proudly served his country in the Coast Guard from 1970 to 1974 and in the Coast Guard Reserves from 1975 to 1979. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for a period of six months in 1975.
Throughout his career, Douglas worked at various positions, including Ace Auto, Crossroads Mall as a CAT 2 certified Security Officer, substitute teacher at Jordan School District, Forestry County Service, and as a counselor at YES (Youth Employment Services).
Douglas was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a High Priest, Sunday School Secretary, and Sunday School Teacher for the Youth, among many other positions.
In his free time, Douglas enjoyed role-playing games, strategy games, model trains, and was the creator of several games, including "Shields of Power," "Nova Fighter," and "Crystal Warriors." He was also in the process of writing an unfinished play and a book. When he attended the University of Utah, he participated in a play called "The Raid, The Trial of George A. Cannon." When we lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado he participated in two plays, "A Day and a Night and a Day" and "Saturday Warriors." Loved spending time with his wife; traveling, going to movies and going out to eat. Also loved going on cruises with Tom & Linda Mclelland.
A funeral service to honor Douglas McLelland will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the Hunter 12th Ward located at 3800 South 6755 West, West Valley, Utah 84128. The viewing will take place from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, followed by the funeral service from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. On Thursday, July 20, 2023 will be a celebration of his life at the Hunter 12th Ward from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. On Friday July 21st for friends and family traveling in, there will be a get together at Magna Regional Park, 4042 South 7200 West, from 12 noon to 6pm. There will be playground area, restrooms and splashpads.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions to be made to any Military Veteran Organizations in memory of Douglas McLelland. If flowers are sent, please have them be artificial due to family allergies.
We extend our deepest condolences to the McLelland family during this difficult time. He will be missed by his loving wife, brothers, sisters in law and children and grandchildren.
