Douglas Clayton Roberts, 73, died December 22, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah of lung cancer. He arrived in heaven eager to show off his magic tricks and to tell a few new jokes. He was reunited with his parents, Earl and Merle Irene Melquist Roberts, and his beloved dog, Gideon. He is now charming old friends and new with his charismatic personality. He will be waiting with outstretched arms to receive his "Darlin" wife of 12 years, Carolyn, when her earthly life is over. Doug was born October 27, 1940 in Idaho Falls, Idaho but grew up on Green Street in Salt Lake City where he terrorized the neighborhood with all his friends. He liked to tell the story of how he ran away with the carnival as a young teen where he raced a motorcycle in the hippodrome, a bowl-shaped arena.Doug married Jerolyn Carter in 1958, had two daughters and was later divorced. In 1964 he married Betty Harwood, had two sons and was later divorced after 37 years. He married Carolyn Bigler in 2002. Doug served in both the National Guard and the Army. He worked as a sales rep for Lorillard Tobacco, Eaton Paper and Smith-Southwestern for many years. His proudest business accomplishment was owning and operating Mountain States Stationers, a business supply store. He used his business and sales expertise in other businesses too numerous to list. He was well known in the automobile industry working as a salesman for multiple dealerships in the Salt Lake valley. Doug loved animals of all kinds, nurturing dogs, cats, birds, and fish. He enjoyed bird-watching and kept the bird feeders full. He loved to go duck hunting with his buddies, Don Kundinger and Bill Tobin. He even hunted for and shot a bear. He was an expert wood carver crafting many decoys and other miniature figures. He mastered and performed magic tricks for family, friends, and complete strangers. He enjoyed reading and gourmet cooking. He was proud to tell how he helped establish the first Martini Foundation in Utah and served as a director of the Salt Lake Chapter. The Martini Foundation conducted fund raisers for charities and served as a network for businessmen. Their annual Martini Bash was the event of the year.
