Duane Reid Moss

For the first time in his life, Duane Reid Moss did something quietly, slipping away in his sleep on Jan. 24, 2013 after a long struggle with COPD. Duane was born June 25, 1925 in Garfield, UT, the oldest of Herman Dick Moss and Lydia Faye Reid s five children. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Arvon and sister Merle (Wall). He is survived by his sweet and loving wife LaWana, sisters Maureen Condie and Gayle Sweeney, children Greg (Cheryl) Moss, Marianne (Von) Madsen and Marla (Bruce) Spencer, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with more to come. Duane joined the navy at 17 and served honorably in WWII as a signalman on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He came home and soon met his life-long sweetheart, LaWana and took a job at Kennecott Copper, where he worked for 40 years. When three children came along, they were raised at the ballpark, where Duane could be found almost every night umping baseball and softball games. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many positions, including serving as a bishop. He was a loyal Democrat all his life, serving several years on the West Valley City Council. Duane loved nothing more than a spirited political discussion and never missed exercising his right to vote in an election. Later in life, Duane embarked on a second career as a country musician, teaming up with his brother-in-law as The Silverados. He wrote and performed many of his own songs, most dedicated to his beloved wife. He also served as president of the Utah Old Time Fiddlers. Duane always spoke his mind and taught his children and grandchildren to do the same. His gregarious personality leaves a hole in the heart of his family that will never be filled. Always busy, Duane struggled with the forced inactivity of his last years and is surely playing ball again. Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at noon at the Taylorsville South Stake Center at 3495 West 4850 South with a viewing prior to the funeral at 11:00 am. There will also be a viewing for family and friends Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd. Interment will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South.
