Edwin Fred Nickel, 86, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed peacefully into the arms of his heavenly family on Sunday, July 29, 2018. Ed was born September 20, 1931 in Berkeley, California to Arthur William Christian Nickel and Agnes Louise Helena Dinse Nickel as the youngest of two sons. After high school, his family moved to Salt Lake City where he established a career as a cabinet maker. In due time, he met his sweetheart, Phyllis Shaver. They were married on June 17, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple and were blessed with four children. Ed was a gentle man who lived each day with a dash of sarcasm and laughter, and a personal mantra of "first things first" which for him was God and family. Ed shunned idleness and was always busy maintaining his home, cars and yard, building furniture, or serving his family and neighbors. He served in many leadership roles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, culminating his service with 15 years as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Utah Temple. He is survived by his children Bill (Teri), Steve (Kris), Heidi (Paul Philpot) and Dave (Julie); 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
