Evelyn Mabel House Stokes

February 27, 1926 — August 5, 2014

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Evelyn Mabel House Stokes, age 88, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday August 5, 2014. She was born to Adolphus and Mabel Ann Hardman House on February 27, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The oldest of six siblings, Evelyn grew up in the Salt Lake Valley and graduated from West High School. While she was working as a long-distance telephone operator at Fort Douglas she met and married Bill Stokes. They had 6 children, Pauline (John Robinson) of Menlo Park, CA, Robert Stokes (Ruby) of Waitsburg, WA, Virginia Jimenez of Las Vegas, NV, Suzanne Stokes of Albuquerque, NM, Marilyn (Chris Taylor) of Meridian, ID, Sam Stokes (Elaine) of Sparks, NV. She was a dedicated, hard-working mother. The family eventually moved and settled in Sunnyvale, California. Evelyn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving as Primary Counselor, Primary President, Relief Society President, Girls Camp Cook, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Young Women's Advisor, Primary teacher, and Visiting Teacher. Evelyn spent a lifetime helping and serving those around her. She was always willing to give her time and talents to those who needed her help and expertise. She was always studying and learning. She spent many hours reading the scriptures and loved working in the temple. She has a great eye for decorating. Her style was elegant and understated. Evelyn spent her last 20 years in West Jordan, Utah where she continued her loving service to family and friends, old and new. Frequent family gatherings were made easier with this move. We held many family parties, reunions and weddings in her new home in West Jordan. For her 88th birthday Evelyn's children shared their thoughts about her. Here is what we had to say about our Mom: such a leader; got us up early for Seminary; your faith and testimony shines for all to see; spiritual with a strong testimony; you fulfilled your duties with love, care, energy, diligence and with the best you have to offer; she is a good teacher all one has to do is pay attention, and the lessons are there; homemade bread; no matter how old we get we still need direction from you. She is preceded in death by two sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 11, 2014, 11:00 am at the LDS Chapel, 7903 South 2700 West. Viewings will be held Sunday August 10, 2014, 6-8pm at the McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville. Interment will follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
