Fred Warren Pola

June 16, 1943 — August 14, 2012

FRED WARREN POLA, 69, died on August 14, 2012, in his home after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. Fred was born June 16, 1943, to Paul Milton Pola and Ethel Elizabeth Cottam Pola in Salt Lake City, Utah. Fred lived in a rural area of Salt Lake County as a child and graduated from West High School in 1961. He served his country in the Utah Army Reserve for 6 years. Fred married Jeanne Hollingsworth on October 2, 1964, in Salt Lake City and they raised their three children, Greg, Paul, and Michelle, in West Valley City. Jeanne died unexpectedly on November 19, 1990, leaving their family heart-broken. Fred married Denice Brown on September 25, 1997, in Springville, Utah, adding her five children and their families to his own. Fred and Denice made their home in Lehi, Utah, where their blended family spent as much time together as their busy lives would allow. After 33 years of service to the Federal Government, Fred retired from Hill Air Force Base as a civilian employee in January, 1999, and was able to enjoy his hobbies - archery and hunting, fishing, golf, restoring his 1946 Ford, building a family cabin in the mountains of Wyoming, and spending time with his family. Fred loved the mountains and outdoors; his favorite memories were of camping and hunting trips with his friends and family. He began archery as a youth, and participated in it throughout his life, becoming very skillful at the sport. He was a member of the Beehive Wasatch Bowhunters for over 40 years, and loved spending time at the club s archery range in Parleys Canyon. Fred devoted many years of service to the Utah Bowmens Association and the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources and in January of 2008, he was inducted into the Utah Archery Hall of Fame. Fred was also a man of many talents - you name it, he could build it, fix it, or come up with something better. He loved playing with the grandkids, whether it was beating them in a game of hopscotch, or playing cars on his hands and knees on the floor. He loved to take them fishing, shooting with a bow, or camping in the trailer or at the cabin. He was always patient and tender-hearted when the little ones were involved. He used opportunities to teach them and the children remember hearing such lessons as, this is a tool, not a toy . Fred was a quiet, steadfast man who shunned the spotlight and preferred going about behind the scenes, doing whatever needed to be done. His illness was especially difficult for him because he was unable to take care of those he loved and had to allow us to serve him. Fred was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in various callings in the Cedar Hollow 2nd Ward. He loved working with family history and genealogy, and served as a veil worker in the Mount Timpanogos Temple until his illness made it impossible to continue. Fred had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and wanted his family and friends to know that he believed with all his heart in the truthfulness of the restored gospel and he lived his life in accordance with its principles. Fred is survived by his wife, Denice, Lehi; his children Greg (Stephanie), Riverton; Paul, West Valley City; and Michelle, West Jordan; stepchildren Travis (Amy) Floyd, Cedar Hills, Dan (Stephanie) Floyd, Saratoga Springs, Rustin (Emily) Floyd, Keller, Texas, Angie (Greg) King of Eagle Mountain, and Aimee (Kerin) Ure, of Herriman; 17 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings, Bill (Carol) Pola, Jack (Marg) Pola, Judy (Vern) Black, Charles Pola, and David (Patti) Pola. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne, his parents, his brother, Stephen, and his sister-in-law, Karen. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 18, at 1:00 p.m., at the Cedar Hollow Stake Center (2178 North 1200 East, Lehi, Utah). A viewing for friends and family will be held Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, Utah, and at the church from 12:00 - 12:45 pm prior to services. Interment will be at Valley View Memorial Estates, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, following the funeral service.
