George H Gowans 1917 ~ 2012 George H Gowans, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, returned to his Heavenly Father June 10, 2012. He was born May 25, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the first of four children of George Henry and Francis Shields Gowans. He was a graduate of East High School, McCune School of Music and Utah State University. George served a mission for the LDS Church in the Southern Staets Mission. He then enlisted in the Army and was immediately assigned to the Military Band and Orchestra and Fort Douglas and Hill Air Force Base where he spent three years performing for the troops, and then attended Officer Candidate School. He later joined the Reserves and retired as Captain in 1977. He married Hazel Ivy Henderson, in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1945 while both were serving their country; later solemnized in the Logan Temple. Together they raised two children in Logan, Utah and later in El Sobrante, CA. George served as a stake seventy for over 30 years and later as an Oakland Temple ordinance worker for 18 years. He began violin lessons at age 9 and learned to play several other instruments. He obtained BS and MS degrees in music, loved to perform, and joined many orchestras in the East Bay Area, playing into his 90's. George was always extremely patient, positive and cheerful. He never complained or ever criticized anyone. He set a great example for all that knew him. George is survived by children George Phillip (Jean) and Karen Ivy (Glenn) Echols; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Launa (Garn) Henderson and Colleen (Ramon) Dickson. Preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother Charles; and grandson, Andrew George Roy Echols. A viewing for friends and family will be held Friday, June 15, 2012, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Oquirrh Point Chapel, 6567 S. Wakefield Way (abt 6000 W.). Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2012, 10:30 a.m. at the Providence City Cemetery, 700 East River Heights Road, Providence, Utah. Services will be held June 15 & 16, 2012 in Utah under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home, 801-968-3800. Interment, Providence City Cemetery, Providence, Utah.
