Gerrie grew up in Tooele County, graduating from Tooele High School in 1948. Her father was the Stake Dance Director and taught her to dance. She loved to dance, particularly with her father. Later in her teen years, she and her dance partner performed together many times. She played the saxophone in the school band with her brother Jack. Her father also bought her a piano when she was 13 and she taught herself to play the piano. She played for people to sing and dance at most of her school assemblies. She played for her sister Rosalie while she tap danced all over. One time, she even accompanied Jessie Evans Smith, wife of President Joseph Fielding Smith, on a vocal solo. She later learned to play the organ and played for church services for many years.
Gerrie attended LDS Business College and worked as a Secretary for Dec’s Department Store and then she worked for Granite School District for 22 years, where she worked at Brockbank Junior High, John F. Kennedy Junior High and Kearns High School. She was awarded Granite School District Secretary of the Year. She also served as President of the Utah Educational Secretary’s Association and attended conventions in Michigan, Iowa and Mississippi.
Gerrie served LDS missions with her husband in Georgetown, Guyana and in Manila, Philippines. She also served with her husband for many years in the Jordan River Temple.
Gerrie loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. She was so proud of their accomplishments. She attended as many games, performances and graduation ceremonies as possible. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
A special thanks to Intermountain Hospice for their loving care. Cheryl was so compassionate and loving to Gerrie, even singing to her in her final hours. Also, a special thanks to Ann who had been by her side 24 hours a day since her husband passed away.
