Guy LeRoy Buckner, 62, of Taylorsville, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on March 31, 2019. He was born on December 18, 1956, in Salt Lake City, UT to Del L. and Peggy S. Buckner.
He married the love of his life, Carolyn Reynolds, on September 25, 1980, at Red Canyon Lodge, near Flaming Gorge, where they first met. This love would carry on for 38 years, through the birth of two loving daughters, the addition of a son-in-law, and one grandson.
Guy was raised in Granger, Utah. As one of 8 children, there was always a lot to do. He graduated from Granger High School in 1975, and began working for the State of Utah. He soon moved to Taylorsville, Utah, into the home where he lived to this day.
Guy, “Buck,” worked for the State of Utah for 35 years in various capacities. He spent most of those years performing signal maintenance across the state, mainly in and around the Salt Lake valley. He gained many skills and friendships while working for UDOT. He retired in 2011 from his position as supervisor of the signal crew for Region 2.
Guy loved the great outdoors. He spent some of the best hours of his life hunting and fishing. From the time he was a child, his greatest memories were of spending summers outdoors camping and fishing in the mountains with his family, aunts, uncles, and cousins,. He lucked out big time when he married his wife, who he thought would know of all the best hunting spots around. His love of nature only grew as he aged, and he spent the majority of his summers outside working in his yard or on the ranch. He instilled his love of nature in both of his daughters, spending hours outside teaching them to camp, fish, and hunt.
Guy was a loving father to two of the world’s greatest daughters. With the help of Carolyn, they raised the best tomboys around, teaching them how to work hard and to get the job done. But, the girls were equally equipped to teach him all things girly, and Guy jumped right in. He spent hours playing with them, whether it was dress up, “Pretty Pretty Princess”, or reading “Beauty and the Beast” for the thousandth time. He was always willing to get into it and get his hands dirty, or pretty, as the case may be. As they grew up, they were always giving him a run for his money, firing back at him with the same wit and sense of humor that he instilled in them. His love for the girls was challenged only when his grandson, Jaxon, came into the picture. From there on out, it was all about the “adorable, workin’ men”, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Guy loved to take in life from the view of his front porch. He spent hours outside, entertaining family and neighbors alike with his tall tales and world views. His garden was his pride and joy. His tomatoes grew to record setting heights, and he had to show and share with everyone who stopped by. His garden fed his other great passion in life, which was cooking, grilling, and smoking. Guy was an excellent cook and continually impressed anyone whose taste buds came in contact with his food.
Guy was the unofficial neighborhood handyman, always willing to help people in need. If it was broken, he could fix it. If he didn’t know how, soon enough he would. Not only that, but he was more than willing to pass on his knowledge to anyone who wanted to learn. If you ever had a question, you probably thought, “I’ll just call Guy”.
Dad, GB, we are devastated by your passing. You will be fiercely missed!
Guy is survived by his wife Carolyn; his daughters Lynnette (Nicholas, and his grandson and little buddy, Jaxon) Crane and Katie; his mother Peggy Buckner; his brothers Ray (Nancy), Rex (Brenda), Ken (Shelli), Tod (Suzy), Tim (Jamie); his sisters Mai Lyn and Joy; many nieces and nephews; and in-laws Tammy Twitchell and Bret (Laurie) Reynolds. Preceded in death by his father, Del, and his in-laws, AK and Ellen Reynolds.
