It is with heavy hearts we write this story of an amazing man! Although it is impossible to include 84 years in this space, these are just some of the highlights! Those of us that have been blessed to have spent all or part of our lives will smile and those that didn't know him may wish they had. Von and Claudia (Clement) fell in love the first time they met cruising State Streetactually it was the car she was driving that caught his eye, her Dad's NASH. He loved cars, working on engines and racing! Dad and his friends spent many a day at the racetrack, tweaking this, replacing that; his 32 FORD (First On Race Day) was his pride and joy! Graduated from East High School and The University of Utah but continued classes off and on for many years to further his knowledge and stay ahead of the game. Dad knew he was in trouble when Mom called him "Harold" but soon forgot why she was angry when she looked at the flower vase on the table holding a single rose that he brought her every month for many years as another symbol of his love for her. He proudly served our country in the Army during the Korean-conflict and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. Later, Hercules Powder Company hired him after 6 months of background checks. He retired after 32 years and spoke often of the lifelong friendships he cherished but looked forward to spending more time with family and friends. Dad's specialty was NDT and received Special Recognition for his implemented ideas. He also served on the Career Technical Education Advisory Committee for SLCC. Mom and Dad loved to travel in their motorhome. Mostly to Fish Lake but a 3-week adventure took them fishing in Alaska and by the way the Halibut was delicious! They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Hawaii and spent a total of nearly 64 years married happily together. He loved hunting and fishing, period! The outdoors seemed to call him to explore. There were numerous trips to Canyonlands over the years with the gang that are etched in our hearts forever! Night Crawler, Night Crawlerneed a winch! Always the prankster with the greatest sense of humor and his laugh was infectious. He took us to places that are no longer on the maps and now the GPS says they don't exist. He and Mom were always after that illusive Big Mack at Fish Lake (later lovingly referred to as Lake Lake due to the fact that not many fish were being caught). He would guild the boat from "Joe Bush" (now a tree) known as The Mac Run all the way to Scoguards. Lapboard in hand as he counted the copper wire to the desired depth for the perfect catch! That old frog lure rarely let him down. The annual deer/elk hunt evolved from going with his father, brothers and uncles to his best friends Uncle Dick and Uncle Gerry to now include their extended families. Weeks were spent in preparation of the perfect location, to the homemade food they shared. Oh the stories they would tell at the campfire! Dad missed only one hunt when he was at Moms side during her fight for life. It will surely be different this year without him! A humble man till the day he passed, taught us to be grateful for what we had or been given and a work ethic to strive for what we wanted in life. "There's always room for the best" he'd say to help guide us along our path. A proud man of few words, he taught us by example. One that we hope we have instilled in our children and their children as well. A gentle man with the patience of a saint, he was loved by all who came in contact with him. People were drawn to his kindness wherever he went. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". He taught us to be Honest, Trustworthy, Respect others and Accountability for our own actions. Born in Hiawatha, yup you read that right, Hiawatha Utah. Lived in Goshen as a child where his father walked to work at the mines in Tin Tic and later moved to Sugar House where his Mom traded in the travel trailer they lived in for the down payment on their new home.
