Harold William Kern The Bear Our loving husband, father and grandfather returned to heaven on November 12, 2011 surrounded by his family. Harold was born on October 22, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York to William Paul Karl Kern and Valeska Martha Kahlig. He served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to East Germany. Upon returning to the states he entered into the Air Force serving as the organizational supply specialist. He married Ruby Marie Rigby from Burley, Idaho on January 3, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Germany where he was stationed for the next three years. They settled in Salt Lake City, Utah where they raised their four daughters, two sons, and numerous dogs. Harold was a hard worker and had many jobs, but his favorite was working for the Church as the Physical Facilities Manager. He retired from this position in 1997 after twenty years of service. He served faithfully in all his church callings and was always willing to help wherever he was needed. The chief joy in his life was his family and being able to spend lots of time with them. He adored his children and grandchildren and was proud of all their accomplishments. Though he was afflicted with many challenging health problems in his later years, he still made a point of attending all of his grandchildren s activities and giving them his love and support. He was a fine example of persevering and enduring to the end. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his loving wife Ruby, daughter Paula Lynne (Paul) Metcalf, daughter Colleen (Brian) Nielsen, daughter Kathryn (Scott) Mehr, daughter Susan Kern, son Russell (Vanonda) Kern, son Douglas (Shelley) Kern.
