Hazel Belle Hartman

January 27, 1920 — April 5, 2014

Home. at last On April 05, 2014, at the age of 94, our loving and most beautiful Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend, Hazel Belle Hartman, peacefully reunited with her spiritual family, friends and pets. Born January 27, 1920 in Terre Haute, Indiana to William Bryan and Nellie Piker Banks. She is one of eight daughters. There were no TVs or phones while Hazel was growing up. They made their own fun. She told stories of the family house parties and sitting on the porch together. Having seven sisters, she was never without a friend. As children, they played such games as one potato two potato, hide and go seek, and which hand was the rock in. As a teen, she remembered piling in the car with friends, sitting on each others laps singing country songs. They would collect pennies and nickels in a bag to buy White Castle hamburgers. As a child her favorite pet was a small white dog named Princess. After her children were born, the family dog was a collie named Lassie, whom she would spoil and cook liver for every week. She attended Glenayre High school in Indianapolis. While working at Curtis Wright, making aircraft materials during World War II in Indiana, she met and later married the love of her life, James Frank Hartman, on February 09, 1942. Together they had two children whom they were very proud of: James Bryan and Carolyn Lee. Quality time as a family was important and especially eating meals together was a must. Hazel was the floral designer of the family flower shop, Hartman's Florist, in Clifton, New Jersey for several years. She also worked as a receptionist at Walter Kidde, a fire suppression company in New Jersey, for over 20 years where she associated with many people from all over the world. She was very active in the Methodist Church and was a true history buff. Witty with a great sense of humor, a crossword puzzle queen and an avid reader. Such an incredible cook and enjoyed entertaining guests in an elegant manner. Being part of the depression, she appreciated and took exceptional care of everything she had. Impeccable in dress, grammar and mannerism. A very sophisticated and classy lady. Hazel is survived by her children: James Bryan (Vivian) Hartman and Carolyn Lee Clark; grandchildren: Bryan, Jason, James, Aaron (Mary), Paige (Lucas), Bryce & Jennica; 9 great-grandchildren; and sister, Ada Coppeler. She was preceded in death by her husband, an Air Force Veteran; Mother and Father; and sisters: Olive, Virginia, Ella Mae, Pauline, Josephine & Lola. Hazel expressed how thankful she was for the care she received by her caregivers, nurses, therapists and doctors. She acknowledged many of them as Angels in her eyes. Mommy, Gram, Sis, Aunt and Friend. as you journey through to the next life, take with you our sincere love, deep heartfelt recognition and gratitude for all you did and are to us.
