Helen Chavez Brierly Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt and friend, Helen Chavez Brierly, passed away May 12, 2012 in Salt Lake City at the age of 89. Helen was born March 17, 1923 in San Antonio, Texas, to Juan Chavez and Sofia Calvillo. Married Trinidad Diaz December 29, 1940; marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Helen served as Mutual President for many years in the San Antonio Branch. She was loved by all the youth. She was very talented and creative. Blessed with a beautiful voice, she sang solos in church meetings and conferences. She was an accomplished seamstress and wonderful cook. Many missionaries enjoyed her delicious meals. She loved to do ceramics and macrame. She designed and made prom dresses for her daughters. She loved doing beautiful, crafty things. She was also an accomplished upholsterer. She had the Interior Designer Eye . Helen served as an LDS Missionary in Dayton, Ohio in 1970-71. She worked in San Jose, California and married Charles Brierly November 1972. She had a green thumb and loved to garden. She always had a large, beautiful garden. Later she relocated to Salt Lake City. Her children and grandchildren treasure the memory of Christmas and Sunday dinners at Grandma Helen s home. She loved company and loved cooking for everyone. Helen is survived by her children: Arthur T. (Judy) Diaz, Elizabeth Espin, Belinda (Dan) Zangari; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and a sister. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Bennion Care Center for their loving service to Helen. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 12:30 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home 4330 South Redwood Road, with a viewing from 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Park, Bluffdale, Utah.
