Herman Barthule, age 93, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2015 in West Jordan, Utah. He was a former resident of San Jose, California. Herman was born January 11, 1922 in Lincoln, Nebraska to John and Elizabeth Rosenthal Barthule. He was the loving husband of Cleo Lehman Barthule for 67 years. They were married June 5, 1948 in Granger, Utah in Cleo's home, and later sealed in the Oakland Temple. He was the beloved father of Janice (Joe) Barraco and Sharon (Werner) Hoeger, cherished grandfather of 7, and great-grandfather of 11. Herman served four years in the military during World War II. Most of his duties were served on the U.S.A.T. George Washington, crossing the North Atlantic 21 times carrying 7000 troops to the theatre of operations and returning with 5000 patients after the invasion of the continent. They took more troops and returned with more patients than any U.S vessel during the 2nd World War. He was in charge of medical and dental surgical supplies. Herman worked for Dorsey Pharmaceuticals prior to and after his military service. He opened the west coast market in Los Angeles as the Branch Manager. After two years with great results, he was asked to open Northern California, settling in San Jose in 1948. He was employed by Dorsey/Sandoz/Novartis Pharmaceuticals for 46 years. He was instrumental in getting the product Triaminic on the market, which for many years was the most widely used product for symptomatic treatment for cough and colds in the country. As a result, he was commonly known by the pediatricians as Mr. Triaminic. He enjoyed his work immensely often kidding that it "beats working." He was well respected by the physicians and pharmacists he called on over the years. He was honored as a member of the President's Club by Dorsey Laboratories, awarded to the top two percent of their employees. He often reminded the corporate office that he wasn't interested in any additional transfers and promotions because of the love he had for the beautiful area of San Jose. Herman and Cleo were residents of San Jose for 67 years. Herman was a charter member of Almaden Golf and Country Club. He served as President of the club as well as secretary, board member, and Captain of the Seniors. In his younger days he was an avid golfer, having seven holes in one at Almaden, the first being recorded on his daughter's 12th birthday in view of his home. He had a single digit handicap for many years. Herman was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served the Lord in several callings including Sunday School President, High Priest Group Leader, and many years on the Stake High Council. He was a member of Sir Branch 54, serving as Big Sir, Travel Chairman for many years, as well as Branch Chaplain. Herman and Cleo traveled to most states as well as 49 different countries. He was awarded an honorary life membership. He adored his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, which gave him the ultimate great joy and happiness. His main priorities in life were his family, church, and being of service. He often used the expression "Those things you do for yourself die with you. Those things you do for others are eternal." Herman is survived by his wife, Cleo; daughters Janice and Sharon; their spouses, children and grandchildren; and brother Edward. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Carl and Al (Lil); and his sister, Helen (Harold) Kearns. The family would like to thank Summit Home Health & Hospice and Copper Ridge Health Care and their staff for the kind and loving care they provided to Herman. Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah. Family and friends may call from 10 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.
