John David Evans passed away at the young age of 90 on September 25, 2024, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had been a resident of the Sagewood at Daybreak senior living community in South Jordan, Utah and was a former resident of American Fork, Utah; Washington D.C.; and Silver Spring, Maryland. He raised his family in Rockville, Maryland and spent his retirement years in West Jordan, Utah.
John was born on March 2, 1934, in a small mining community known at various times as Royal, Rolapp, and Castle Gate, Utah, the oldest of seven children born to Lillian Eva McDonald and John Issac Evans.
When John was two years old his family moved to American Fork, Utah, where using a pick, shovel, horse-drawn scoop, and hand-cranked cement mixer, his parents dug and built a basement. This ended up being their home until in his high school years when he helped his father build a home above the basement.
John graduated from American Fork High School in the class of 1952. John met the love of his life, Maurine Stimpson, while cruising the Brigham Young University campus. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 17, 1954.
The couple soon moved to Washington D.C. John was hired by the United States Department of Agriculture, where he worked for the remainder of his career. He simultaneously attended night school while working full-time and raising their children, and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees of Commercial Science from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C. Together, John and Maurine had seven children.
John was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many positions throughout the years. He enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts and was often tasked as a ward clerk. He had a great faith in the Savior Jesus Christ and a strong testimony of the truthfulness of His restored gospel.
John was never afraid of hard work which he learned from a young age when he helped raise chickens, rabbits, cows, calves, and pigs and tend the garden for his family's sustenance. Later in life, if he saw a project that needed to be accomplished, he would jump right in, often completing the work before the beneficiary knew what he was doing.
John enjoyed traveling and was able to visit six different continents and numerous countries. He also enjoyed camping, hiking, and watching sports as a fan of the Washington Redskins (as they were known at the time), Baltimore Orioles, and the BYU sports teams. John was known for his wit and dry sense of humor.
Family was of utmost importance to John who loved teasing and wrestling with the little ones and sat through countless recitals and concerts in support of his children and grandchildren. He was a beloved husband and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
John is survived by his five daughters: Irene Marie Evans (Ted Pacheco), Debra Kay Evans, Cathy Jo (Larry) McKnight, Linda (Bruce) Ward, and Carol Darla (Brian) Strong; and two sons: David John (Viona) Evans, and James S (Dee Anne) Evans. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Richard and Nephi Evans.
John was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers Robert and Norman Evans, and sisters Naomi Diamond and Jean Bateman.
John's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Sagewood at Daybreak for the care and attention he received during his time there.
