September 2, 1954, John and Margaret were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Austin Udy, John's father, passed away on March 16, 1956. Following the untimely death of his father, John continued running the family farm supporting his stepmother, younger brothers, and sister. He discontinued working the farm about 1970. John invested time and land into the development of Udy Springs, known later as Belmont Springs Resort. John volunteered much of his time to make this venture successful. He kept an RV trailer in "His Spot" at the RV park. He enjoyed camping, swimming and golf.

For many years, John was an active member of the American Welding Society, serving as an officer and committee member in the Utah Section. In 1980 John was the honored recipient of the HOWARD E. ADKINS MEMORIAL INSTRUCTOR MEMBERSHIP AWARD, having been nominated by his peers across the United States. This award represents excellence in the teaching and training of students in welding. John was well known for his knowledge, abilities, skills, and lectures nationwide.
John continued to actively pursue his interests after retiring, by traveling, golfing, fishing, hunting, keeping "In-Shape" at the Fitness Center, and snow skiing into his 70's.
