Joy Ann Player Bateman

A joyous reunion took place on Saturday, August 22, 2015, when Joy joined her loved ones waiting for her beyond the veil. Those left behind will treasure times spent with "Grandma Joy". We are all grateful she can now run, dance, sew, bake, and remember the important events of her life. Joy Ann Player Bateman was born May 16, 1930, in Murray, Utah to Charles Leo and Blanche Baguley Player of Bennion, Utah. Joy grew up in a loving home with three brothers and three sisters during the years of the great depression. Their family bonds were strong and the large family grew together as they struggled to survive the hard times. Joy was a talented musician who was the ward organist in the Bennion Ward at the age of 14; she also played the trumpet in school. She attended Plymouth Elementary and Granite High School, where she graduated in 1948. Her accomplished sewing skills won her a full ride scholarship to college but she chose a different course in life. On August 17, 1948, Joy married Earl Ray Bateman of West Jordan, Utah in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised their four children on a dairy farm in West Jordan before moving to Rupert, Idaho in 1970. They later divorced. In 1981, Joy moved back to Taylorsville, Utah, to be near her family where she spent the next 32 years of her life. Joy was full of life and energy! She was an excellent seamstress and spent hours sewing for family and friends. Cooking Sunday family dinners of pot roast, mashed potatoes, and chocolate pie was her specialty. In addition, her brownies were in high demand by her grandchildren. During her later years, she made quilts and crocheted around blankets and burp bibs for all the new babies born into the family. She was an example of Christ like love. This meant that she was a friend to everyone. Joy leaves behind a legacy of kindness and endless service, always thinking of others. Everyone who met her felt that they were the most important person in the world. Joy had a burning testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and shared it with all she met. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Primary, Relief Society and the Young Woman organizations where she influenced many. For eight years she was a receptionist at the Jordan River Temple. While living in the Taylorsville Stake, she served as a Stake missionary. Joy is survived by her son, Michael (Sue) Bateman; daughters Jill (Larry) Danley, Jolene (Kent) Tanner and Cindy (Craig) Caldwell; a sister, Pat Vincent; 18 grandchildren (2 deceased) and 47 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 29, 2015, 11:00 a.m., at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah. Viewings for family and friends will be held, Friday, August 28, 2015, 6-8:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service, 10-10:45 a.m., at McDougal Funeral Home. Interment, Taylorsville City Cemetery. The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Ashford Memory Care and Brighton Hospice for the loving care they gave to our mom, grandmother and great-grandmother.
