Joyce Elizabeth Smith Longman 1944 ~ 2024
Our loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Friend, age 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Taylorsville, Utah surrounded by her loving family, on the morning of Saturday, March 16, 2024.
She was born May 27th, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The daughter of Edward B. Smith and Elizabeth "Betty" Westerman Smith. Joyce attended Whittier Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High, and graduated from South High School in 1962.
Early in her career, she was employed with Mountain Bell Telephone Company. During that time, she met her eternal companion, Dale Herbert Longman, at the Terrace Ballroom. Dad knew instantly she was the "one."
Later they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 26, 1965, and sealed for time and all eternity.
Our Mother was a hard worker and had a wonderful work ethic. She was employed several years working in the Credit Union industry. She was proud to say "she retired as #1 in seniority in reservations with jetBlue Airlines after 18 years".
Joyce had a strong testimony of her savior Jesus Christ and of the restored gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings including Relief Society President, Stake Young Women's Presidency, and her favorite calling was the Compassionate Service Leader, where she personalized each individual's funeral luncheon. She loved ministering to the sisters. Mom always had a passion for doing for others and making them feel special.
Joyce was a beautiful woman inside and out, she took pride in her appearance, spending many hours in the hair salon. You never saw her without lipstick and jewelry.
She loved her home and always kept it clean and organized. She especially loved to decorate for every holiday for family and friends. Mom was the greatest party planner, spending countless hours to make sure every detail was perfect.
Her hobbies included going to Hale Centre Theatre, dining out, shopping, traveling - Disneyland and going to Las Vegas to attend a George Strait concert. Mostly she enjoyed spending time at her cabin "Down South" in Fremont Utah, for over 50 years, where she enjoyed playing a competitive game of Aggravation, our family's board game version of marbles. Her greatest joy was her family and she supported them in every way. She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends. We are comforted to know we will be reunited with her again someday.
Survived by her loving husband Dale, of 58 years, and 4 Children: Lori Thomas, Stacey (Daryl) Reedy, Jennifer (Scott) Buckingham, and Steven Longman; eight grandchildren, Spencer, Carli (Dylan) Carter, Chris, Nathan, Tanner, Tyler, Britton, and Avenley Elizabeth.
Joyce was anxiously awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild, Victoria Joyce Carter, with many extended family members.
Preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Roy W. Salt, and Brother Edward Smith.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff of Intermountain Hospice for the loving, compassionate care they provided to our mom. And a special thank you to her ward members and neighbors for their thoughtful acts of kindness.
