Kathleen Miller Duran Loving Wife and Mother Kathleen Despain Miller Duran ended her earthly journey on May 14, 2012 after a courageous battle with Matastatic Melanoma. Kathleen was born on June 13, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Neldon and Carolyn Despain. Kathleen grew up in the Salt Lake Valley with her mother, Carolyn and her new Daddy, Lavell Miller. She was the 2nd oldest in a family of eight children. During her high school years, she met the love of her life, John Manuel Duran. They were married On September 5, 1959 and for 52 years they shared a loving bond filled with joy, excitement, and trust. Kathleen had a very empathetic heart. She made everyone feel comfortable around her because of her warm and accepting nature. Her caring disposition reflected on her profession as a school crossing guard. She protected the children of West Valley City for 25 years. Kathleen loved butterflies. As a young girl, she would raise butterflies in her self-made terrarium. Kathleen also loved the mountains. At every opportunity, with breakfast burritos and hot chocolate in hand, the family would head to the mountains for a weekend of fishing, hiking, and exploring. Kathleen was the family story keeper. Her knowledge of family history was unparalleled. She always had a camera in hand ready to take a snapshot at every opportunity. Her family and extended family would spend hours reminiscing from these photos. The most important thing, though, was her family and faith. Kathleen was blessed with six children; her son, John (Susan), and her daughters, Teresa, Patricia, Jeanille (Bill), Alicia (Brad), and Christina (Ryan). Her family continued to grow as she welcomed nine grandchildren; Katherine, Jacob, Noah, Aaron, Sara, Allison, Natalie, Angelica, and Madison. She also has one great-grandson, Dylen. Kathleen was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1963. She was a devout Catholic who was devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is survived by her husband, John Manuel; son, John (Susan); daughters, Teresa, Patricia, Jeanille (Bill), Alicia (Brad) and Christina (Ryan). Kathleen has 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; siblings: Carolyn, Jeanine, Michael, Toni, Phillip. Preceded in death by parents; siblings, Lynn Dee and Timothy. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 21, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 3580 West 3650 South. A viewing will be held Sunday, 6-7 p.m., with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road. Interment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
