Larry Douglas Stoddard, MD

October 3, 1952 — August 28, 2018

Larry Douglas Stoddard died unexpectedly at his Bountiful, Utah, home late in the night/early morning of August 28, 2018. He was born on October 3, 1952, to Douglas L. And Orlene Rickenbach Stoddard. A lifelong lover of learning and academic achievement, he graduated from Granger High School as a Math Sterling Scholar. He then served a mission in Paris, France, from 1971 to 1973. After returning, he worked full-time while completing a double major bachelor's degree in chemistry and French at the University of Utah. He then attended medical school at the University of Utah. There he met his soulmate, Deborah Fiet. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 2, 1979. Larry and Debbie welcomed their first child in 1981. In medical school, he found a passion for surgery during his participation in the surgery honors program. He completed an internship and residency in urology at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where they welcomed a second child in 1983. Afterward, he served as the head of urology at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Larry and Debbie completed their family in Biloxi with the birth of twins in 1987. During their time in Biloxi, Larry experienced a medical mistake that seriously affected his health and contributed to chronic pain and illness for the remainder of his life. After being discharged from the Air Force, Larry moved with his family to different climates for his health and pursued his career as a urologist in private practice. After Biloxi, they moved to Poulsbo, Washington; Las Vegas, Nevada; and then back to his home in Northern Utah. Larry continued to struggle with his health, but he found ways to accept and adapt to his limitations and make the most of what life had to offer. Despite being unable to work for the last several years of his life, he loved to stay mentally active by studying and researching medicine, science, languages, and other topics of interest; watching Jeopardy; and playing logic puzzles and games. He enjoyed good food and was an excellent cook. Somewhat of a polymath, Larry was passionate about sharing his knowledge and using it to help others, and he had a wonderful sense of humor. He was incredibly giving and generous and would give someone the shirt off his back without a second thought if he saw a need. He loved dogs, particularly Great Danes, and spent the moments just before his death in his nightly routine of walking the dogs. Larry will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Whitney; and parents, Douglas and Orlene. He is survived by his wife, Debbie; son, Jonathan (Shannon), who lives in Washington DC; son, Andrew Stoddard, who lives in Bountiful; and daughter, Amanda Rowan (Timothy), who lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. He leaves behind 2 grandchildren, Shepherd and Maya. He is also survived by his siblings and their children: Susan Silcock, who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and has 3 children; Connie Miller (Steve), who lives in Bastian, Virginia, and has 5 children; Diane (Alan) Rogers, who lives in Santaquin, Utah, and has 5 children; and Chris (Wendy) Stoddard, who lives in WVC, Utah, and has 5 children.
