Leonard LeRoy Telford

March 14, 1920 — May 25, 2013

Leonard LeRoy Telford 1920-2013 Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather, Leonard LeRoy Telford, passed away peacefully Friday, May 24, 2013, with his devoted wife of 73 years, Leona Marie VandenAkker Telford, and other family members, at his side. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Robert and Charlotte Rock Telford, the fourth of four sons. He and Leona married in 1940, and were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Marilyn, who passed away at age 2 1/2 while Leonard was on leave from the U.S. Navy. In the Navy he served on the aircraft carrier USS Munda Bay. After his return, they settled in Taylorsville, Utah, where they raised their four sons and one more daughter. Leonard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including branch president in Burlington, Iowa. His career was in sales and service related to the dairy industry. He was also active in the Taylorsville Lions Club. He loved golf, music, playing the organ and harmonica, Hawaii, fishing, camping, riding horseback into the High Uintahs, and flying airplanes. In addition to his musical talents, he was also an artist and loved creating gifts for his family. His greatest joy was being with family, and he remembered every one of his large posterity, up until the end of his life. He is survived by his wife, Leona, four sons and one daughter, Gary (Jill) currently serving a mission in Preston, England; Jim (Terrie), Bountiful; Randy (Betsy), Sandy; Dan (Karen), Draper; and Janean (Dan Toone), Taylorsville; 25 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Marilyn, parents, and brothers James, Jack, and Stan. The family wishes to express gratitude for the kind and loving care given to their dad by the workers at Caresource. In respect for Leonard s love and support for the missionary program, in lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the LDS Church Missionary Fund. Funeral will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, 12:00 noon at the Taylorsville Stake Center, 1365 West 4800 South. Friends and family are invited to a viewing Thursday, May 30, 6 - 8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, and also Friday, 10:30-11:30 at the church, prior to the services.
