Marion Fredrick Straup was born, February 23, 1918, Glens Ferry, Idaho to Royal Ellis Straup and Tranquilla Ann Pederson. He died January 25, 2016. He was the eldest son of eight siblings: Helen Ruth Loraine, Charles LeGrand, Viola Rae, Ella Elizabeth, Ellis LeRoy, Mary J. and Pearl M. He married Virginia Nielson, 1942, later divorced. He was deferred during WWII making airplanes. Employed by U of U Kennecott Copper School of Mines, Experimental Division. He was a harmonica player in a Senior Citizen group that performed all over Salt Lake County; inventor of the "corn cob harmonica"; emeritus member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He learned some German while at work and sign language. He made needed minute corrections for Thiokol on the space ship when others feared possible explosion of jet fuel. He loved Astronomy. He built over a hundred dual microfiche/microfilm capability genealogical cameras used worldwide by the LDS church with long-time friend and millionaire, Harold Noffsinger, in his backyard garage on 9th South. He was the Explorer Leader of a troop in the LDS 36th Ward who built "ski-scooters" used during a High Uintah back packing camping trip. His mother was personal friends with the founder of McDougal Funeral Home and Elder LeGrand Richards who transcribed remarks at her funeral which are posted on NewFamilySearch. He's loved and missed by all who knew him, his family and friends as being kind, caring, long-suffering, faithful and by his beloved Relief Society President. He is survived by a daughter; 11 grandchildren; and at least 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons, David Alan Straup, Charles Frederick, Michael. Funeral services will be held, Friday, January 29th, 10:00 a.m., at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, where a viewing will be held prior to services, 9-9:45 a.m. Interment, West Jordan City Cemetery.
