Mary Lou Broadwater passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024, at the age of 92, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on March 29, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lawrence and Keziah Standing. She was married to Ronald Maurice Broadwater on May 4, 1951, and later sealed in the Jordan River Temple in June of 1996. She also served in the Temple for several years.
Mom grew up near Liberty Park in Salt Lake City and attended South High School. She loved singing in the A Cappella Choir there. When their choir was selected from all of the high schools in Utah to perform on the radio in California, it was a highlight of her life. Her love of music continued throughout her life. She loved singing around the piano with her family in her youth and dancing the jitterbug with her brothers. We grew up listening to mom play the piano and singing. After high school she attended the LDS Business College.
When Mom and Dad were dating, Dad took her to go horseback riding. Mom had never been on a horse before. The prankster that he was, he thought it would be funny after getting Mom up on the horse to slap it on the backside. It took off with Mom clinging to the horse's mane as it jumped a ditch and a fence rushing back to the barn. Mom never liked horses after that but she had a good sense of humor and she loved Dad.
Mom worked for 30 years at the Utah Air National Guard in the 151st and 181st Air Refueling Group, retiring in 1992. During that time, she always kept our family the center of her life. Family time was very important to Mom. She made sure we kept our family traditions like vacations to Laguna Beach, Defa's Ranch, and Bear Lake and made each Christmas a magical holiday for us.
Mom loved to play sports in her youth and later she loved watching baseball, tennis, and ice skating. She wouldn't miss a baseball playoff or world series game. She enjoyed playing bridge and bowling with her lifelong friends, and even at 92 she could beat you at Kings Corner.
Above all else, the love of her family was paramount in her life. She cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She never complained, even as things got difficult for her, she still kept her sense of humor.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband Ronald, parents and siblings (Beth, Vaughn, Earl and Glen), and her daughter-in-law Cindy Rich Broadwater. She is survived by her children; Gary Broadwater (Cindy), Terri Haslam (Mark), and Chris Beazer (Steve). Grandchildren; Angie, Mindy, Corey, Carly, Tina, Ryan, David, Scott, Tyson, Kimberlee, Kelcee, and Trevor, and 31 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
A special thanks to Dr. Rebecca Moore and her staff Julie, Tammy, and Mindy at the St. Marks Senior Center for their excellent loving care for Mom over the years.
