With heavy hearts, we share the news of Meng Sreng Chhour's passing, a man whose life exemplified resilience, perseverance, and an unyielding spirit. At 82 years old, Meng embarked on his final journey, leaving behind a profound legacy of courage, love, and determination.
Born on September 29th, 1941, in Batambong, Cambodia, Meng spent his early years assisting his parents in managing a family market. In 1970, he found lifelong love in Phek Taing, whom he married that same year. Together, they faced the unimaginable challenges of the Khmer Rouge regime, demonstrating extraordinary strength that shaped their lives and the future of their family. Their relentless pursuit of a better life led them to immigrate to the United States in 1980, where they embraced their new homeland with open arms, hope, and a steadfast determination to succeed.
In 1986, Meng co-founded a family restaurant, which he tirelessly ran for two decades. As an entrepreneur, he worked to provide for his family and contribute to his community. A devoted family man, Meng instilled the values of hard work, education, and the importance of familial bonds. His life stood as a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity, inspiring all who knew him.
Upon retiring in 2011, Meng finally had the opportunity to travel with Phek, exploring destinations such as Cambodia, China, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Spain, France, and Italy. Their shared adventures mirrored their deep love for each other. Phek will deeply miss her lifelong companion; their enduring bond is a testament to the strength of their relationship.
Meng is preceded in death by his parents, Houk Hak Chhour and Eng Lim, and three children lost during the genocide: Dua Hea, Mila Ut, and Muy Chhour. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Phek Taing; sons Chang (Tracey), Seth (Anna), Huat (Kim Bangon); daughters Julie (Khang Vo), Sunny (Tommy Johnson), and his 13 cherished grandchildren; Khyler Chhour, Kaden Chhour, Max Chhour, Ava Vo, Claire Vo, Greyson Chhour, Penelope Johnson, Ophelia Chhour, Nora Vo, Miles Johnson, Aleena Bangon, Kayla Bangon and Kaiden Vongpasert.
A viewing will take place on Friday, June 7th, from 5-9pm. A memorial service celebrating Meng's extraordinary life will be held on Saturday, June 8th, at McDougal Funeral Home from 7-9am. Those wishing to honor Meng's memory may send flowers directly to McDougal Funeral Home, located at 4330 S Redwood Rd, Taylorsville, Utah.
Though Meng's physical presence may be gone, his impact on countless lives will endure as a testament to the power of the human spirit. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will guide us through life's challenges with the same strength and resilience that defined his remarkable journey on earth.
