MERLIN BYBEE SAMPSON Sept. 2, 1924 ~ Jan. 17, 2014 Merlin Sampson was born on September 2, 1924 in Delta, Utah to Benjamin Franklin Sampson and Mary Francetta Cook Sampson. He was the ninth of ten children. He died on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at the age of 89. Merlin served in the Navy during World War II for three years. He was promised in a blessing that he would never have to take another person's life during his military service. He often shared the story that the closest he ever came to using any weapon was when he was the third in line in handing the shell to load the cannon on the battleship he served on. Merlin served a full-time mission in the California/Oregon mission in 1948. He married Carol Niederhauser on August 25, 1950 in Logan, Utah. They raised nine children: Shauna Rae, David Merlin, Tauny Lee, Glen Arthur, Charles Easton, Clayton Max, Brett Robert, Kelle Francetta, and Mark Hurst. Merlin worked alongside his brother, Easton, for many years in several of their business ventures. He served in many callings, as bishop, member of the High Council, and High Priest Group Leader, just to name a few. He especially enjoyed his calling as the stake mission president when that calling was still given. Merlin was very missionary-minded and encouraged his children to serve full-time missions. Merlin is survived by his sister, Lou Etta Sampson Mortensen. He was preceded in death by Carol, his son-in-law, Mark Haehl, and his eight older brothers and sisters, Fontella, Melba, Charles, Mable, Betty, Faires, Roe Ann, and Easton.
