Michael Morrison Hammond

Michael Morrison Hammond peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family on May 21, 2018 in West Jordan, Utah due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease). Michael was born April 24, 1938 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Russell Sherman Lloyd and Jenna Vee Esther Morrison. Soon after his birth, his parents were divorced. He was raised in Washington, D.C., Utah and Arizona. He graduated from Olympus High School in Salt Lake City in 1956. Immediately after graduation, he joined the Army reserves. Michael spent the first six months in active duty in the army engineering corps, and completed his reserve service eight years later. Michael attended Henager's Business College and graduated from the University of Utah in 1966 with a Bachelors in Political Science. In 1968, he graduated from BYU with an MBA. He attended Weber State University to earn a second BS degree in Accounting in 1972. He received his CPA credentials shortly thereafter. Michael worked mostly in finance positions throughout his career, including positions of controller and chief financial officer. He was employed at the following companies: Interstate Brick Co. in Salt Lake City; Amalgamated Sugar Company in both Ogden and Nampa, Idaho; the Department of Systems Planning for the State of Utah; Coca Cola Bottling Co in Salt Lake City; Hugo Neu Steel Products in Salt Lake City; Krutex Energy in Kaysville; Foreland Corporation in Ogden; Hammond & Co, CPAs in Salt Lake City; Gibbs Smith Publishing in Layton; Custom Finance in Murray; Renaissance Golf in Draper; Thanksgiving Point Institute in Lehi; Gary Leavitt Co in Orem; and Diatek Internat'l in Heber City. Michael served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Scotland from 1961 to 1963. He married Martha Karan Williams on June 3, 1968 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are parents of eight children. Michael served faithfully in many ward and stake positions. He and his wife served a one year LDS mission to Inner City Ogden area. Michael and Martha lived in Kaysville, Utah, Ogden, Utah, Nampa, Idaho, Riverdale, Utah, Orem, Utah, and West Jordan, Utah. They raised their children mostly in Riverdale, Utah. Michael's favorite pastimes were studying secular and religious history. He was a voracious reader and collected an impressive library. Mike loved BYU football and rarely missed a game in over forty years. Michael is survived by his wife Martha; their children: Paul (Rebecca) Hammond, W. Jordan, UT; Matthew (Alisha Jensen) Hammond, Temecula, CA; Heather (Blair) Palmer, Malad, ID; Aaron (Kris) Hammond, Chandler, AZ; Alisha Hammond, W. Jordan, UT; John Hammond, San Diego, CA; Jennifer (James) Moss, Ogden, UT; and Heidi (Steve) Cullen, Brooklyn, NY; 19 grandchildren; 2 in-law grandchildren; and soon to be one great-grandchild. Michael is also survived by his siblings Helen, Esther, Arthur, Christine, and Elaine. Michael was preceded in death by his step-father; mother; and sister Rebecca. The family would like to thank Symbii Home Health Care and Hospice. Their providers were loving, professional, caring and dependable. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. in the LDS Building found at 6592 W. Haven Maple Drive in West Jordan, where viewings will be held Friday, June 1st from 6-8:00 p.m. and prior to the funeral from 10-11:30 a.m. Services under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.
