Newell Kay Garff, age 87, passed away June 30, 2014 in Murray, Utah. Born September 24, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah, son of Moses S. and Mary Rasmussen Garff. Raised in Midvale, Utah and graduated from Jordan High School in 1944. Graduated from California College of Mortuary Science, in Los Angeles, California, December, 1948. Also attended the University of Utah. Married Shirley Erekson August 17, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Newell and Shirley resided in the Holladay, Cottonwood and Murray areas during their 65 years of marriage. Retired from First Security Bank in 1985 and then worked in the mortuary business. He was a member of the Murray Jaycees and served as the Utah State Chairman of the Distinguished Award Program. Was president of the Kiwanis Club of Murray, and later he and Shirley were members of the Southeast Lions Club in Salt Lake City. Newell was a member of the Midvale City and Orem City volunteer fire departments. Received a 60 year service award from Utah State Fireman's Association. He was an active member of the LDS Church, currently residing in the Little Cottonwood 14th Ward of Murray. Newell and Shirley enjoyed attending the Heritage Senior Center in Murray and Mt. Olympus Senior Center in Holladay. Preceded in death by son, Kim N. Garff, of West Jordan. Survived by wife, Shirley; daughters, Shauna Parry and Lorna (Jim) Gochis, both of Taylorsville; sister, Beverly (Blaine) Holt, of Midvale; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 7, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Estates Mortuary, 5850 South 9th East Murray City Cemetery, 5600 South Vine Street where a viewing will be held, 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Arrangements under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.
