Rawlin J Evans

RAWLIN J. EVANS Rawlin J. Evans, our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, died peacefully on October 21, 2011. Born to Thomas Jones and Maud Wolstenholme Evans at home on January 9, 1921 in Hunter (now West Valley City) Utah, Rawlin was the youngest of 7 children. With six siblings from ages 7 to 21, Rawlin received ample teasing from his brothers and spoiling from his sisters. As a boy, Rawlin helped on the family farm, attended the old Whittier Elementary School, delighted in sledding with his friends down 5600 West from 4100 South to 3500 South and was fascinated with electronics. He took his first airplane ride, which was over the Salt Lake Valley, in 1938, but his love affair with flying started years before that. After graduating from Cyprus High, he enrolled in Utah State Agricultural College, (now Utah State University) where his education included earning his private pilot license. During the summer of 1942, Rawlin met, fell deeply in love with and courted ardently Norma Tree. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Rawlin had enlisted in the Army. He was called to active duty in November 1942. Rawlin piloted a C-47 cargo plane during WWII. On a 3-day pass while Rawlin was in training, he married Norma on June 12, 1943 in Merced, CA. Their marriage was solemnized in the LDS Temple a few months later. After WWII, Rawlin supported his family by repairing radios, then TVs when they became popular household appliances. Self-taught, he advanced from repairman for Sylvania to Manager of Production for Evans and Sutherland, with many jobs between. For 15 years he, Norma and their children lived in Phoenix where they loved the desert and didn t miss the snow. Rawlin is survived by children: Rawlin A. (Marie Heaney) Evans; Julene (David) Fisher; JoNell Evans (Stacia Ireland). Preceded in death by Norma, beloved wife of 65 years; infant daughter, Irva Maria; brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 27, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Hunter Stake Center (3737 South 5600 West). Viewings will be held Wednesday, 6-7:30 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and again Thursday, 10-10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Elysian Gardens (1075 East 4580 South).
