Sherril Burns

July 11, 1937 — June 2, 2024

Sherril Smith Burns knew how to play. From singing songs and playing games with her children and grandchildren to traveling all over the world, she always knew where to find the fun.

She is now with the great love of her life, Duane Edward Burns whom she married August 5, 1955, and whom she was sealed to June 11th, 1965. After twenty-three years apart, they are finally together again.

If Sherril wasn't jumping rope and clapping her hands, she was taking her family to one of her many favorite vacation destinations-Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, and Snowbird. Duane and Sherril traveled extensively and Sherrill worked hard to organize the family and make sure everyone had a good time.

If she wasn't on vacation or traveling to see a University of Utah football or basketball game, she was a gracious hostess, passing out sodas and candy, or seconds from the hostess cupcake factory. Duane and Sherril hosted Sunday dinner for their children and grandchildren every week for decades. Their hard work and dedication kept the family close and built strong bonds of love and friendship among their posterity, who still enjoy getting together when they can.

Her greatest commitments were to family and church. She served many years in the Young Women's organization and the girls she served loved having Sherril as a leader. She was as playful as they were and sometimes just as mischevious. She also had an opportunity to work on the committee to write church manuals and she often spoke with fondness of the things she learned during that time.

Sherril loved her days as a child living on West Temple and attending West High. She was in the Pep club and ran around with a group of girls she would stay friends with her entire life. While living on West Temple, Sherril enjoyed meeting and interacting with the many friends and family always coming and going in that little house. It was where she learned to love serving and hosting others. Her parents were good to her and she looked back with fondness on the loving home she grew up in.

Sherril was born in St. John's Arizona on July 11th, 1937, and passed away in Sugarhouse, Utah, June 2nd, 2024.

She will be missed by her five children, Gordon (Diane) Burns, Sharlene (Alan) Cranney, MaryAnn Hagblom, David (Jill) Burns, and Linda Mattson; her 18 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; her brother Kirby (Donna) Smith, and her sister-in-law Earlene Smith.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Duane Edward Burns; her parents, James Phelan Smith and Madge Winsor Smith; her grandson, Taylor Phelan Mattson; her son-in-law, Tim Mattson; and her siblings James (Dorothy) Smith, Peggy (Wilford) Tueller, William (Glenna) Smith, Theresa (Ronald) Canham, and Karl Smith.

The family would like to thank Enhabit home health and hospice and Legacy Village of Sugarhouse for their thoughtful care of Sherril in the last years of her life.
