Our beautiful mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Shirley Abplanalp Bodily, was welcomed into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 29, 2023, in Kearns, Utah. The party has started! She is happy and rejoicing, as she is once again reunited with many loved ones and friends. She is finally free from the pains and illnesses of this mortal life, which she endured so well.
Shirley was born in Vernal, Utah, on May 21, 1936, to Winona Beck and James Peter Abplanalp, in the home of her Great-grandpa and Grandma Freestone. Shirley was blessed to have one younger brother, Kent, that she has loved and cared for very much!
At a young age, Shirley's family moved to Bingham Canyon, Utah. She lived there many years and loved sharing many fond memories of her time there. Shirley graduated from Bingham High School and proudly wore her Bingham High School 1954 class reunion t-shirt. The amazing Bingham Canyon Mine is now where her childhood home once stood.
After being set up on a blind date, she met and later married the love of her life, Irving Vance Bodily, on June 29, 1955, in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Salt Lake a short time before moving to Kearns, Utah, where they resided up until the time of their deaths. They had 7 children, Wayne, Troy, JaNae, Brent, Kent, JaNene and Melanie. Shirley was always very proud of her twins and would talk about them any chance she got. Her family truly meant everything to her! For many, many years, on Sundays, her home was packed with food and family, and she absolutely loved it!
Shirley was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and fulfilled many callings. She especially loved Primary and Relief Society. She had a great love of the Lord and His gospel and had a great desire to teach it to her children and grandchildren.
Shirley loved cats! She had many throughout her life. Shirley loved holidays, especially Christmas. She spent hours hanging lights on the house and in the cherry trees, painting her windows with holiday scenes, and baking sugar and raisin-filled cookies. Shirley was a seamstress. She made stuffed animals, clothes, costumes, and even wedding dresses for her daughters. Shirley was a florist and especially loved making boutonnieres and corsages. Shirley also enjoyed doing Family History work and made many books for her family of pictures and life histories.
Shirley and Vance were both from Vernal and took their family back there often. They spent many hours together on the mountain, camping and hunting. They also owned property in Murray, Utah, know as the "Bodily Farm" where their family has spent and will continue to spend many fun holidays together.
The family would like to give special thanks to Aspire Home Health and Hospice for the love and care they gave to Shirley, especially to Kim, Nikki, Martha, and Ross.
Those looking forward to being reunited with her again are her children Wayne(Janet), Troy (Tammy), JaNae (Ron) Christensen, Brent (Tamara), Kent (Cammy), JaNene Schiffman, and Melanie (Brinton) Baggaley; 27 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren; brother Kent (Barbara) Abplanalp; and brother-in-law Verdin Bodily. Rejoicing with her in a sweet reunion are her husband Vance; parents, Winona and James Abplanalp, in-laws Reva and Sterling Bodily; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Renae (Edward) Ormsby, Clela (Otis) Nielsen, Velma Loy, Larry (Judy), and Evelyn Bodily.
