Shirley May Gundersen Sawyer

December 1, 1938 — July 17, 2016

Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Shirley May Gundersen Sawyer, age 77, of West Valley City, passed away July 17, 2016. She was born to Quay Mathias and Mary Ethel Hillman Gundersen on December 1, 1938, in Mammoth, Utah. She married Donald Albert Osness in 1958. They had five children in two-and-half years ( two sets of twins).They later divorced. She married Dennis Lyle Sawyer April 19, 1968. Shirley was a true example of charity and love. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and donated blankets, afghans, and doilies to various charities. Even to the last week of her life, she had a crochet hook in her hand making hats for refugees. She is survived by her husband; and children, Robert (Angie) Osness, Mary (Jerry) Duke, Donald (Danylle) Osness, and Donna (Wes) Brown; and siblings, Vivian Gay Davis, Ray Gundersen, Dennis Gundersen, and John Gundersen. Preceded in death by son, Larry; and granddaughters, Mary Ann Duke, and Desaray Brow Odekirk. Our family is missing it's heart - yet through mom's example we will carry on in love and charity. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 21, 11 a.m., at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road. Viewings will be Wednesday, July 20, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to funeral services, both at the funeral home.
