Sylvia Stringham Brown

July 3, 1933 — December 11, 2018

Sylvia Stringham Brown passed away on December 11, 2018, at her daughter Maria’s home in West Jordan, Utah. Sylvia was born on July 3, 1933, to Frank B. and Ruth Scott Stringham in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sylvia graduated from West High School. She attended the University of Utah and graduated in Elementary Education in 1956. She married Charles Lee Brown in the Salt Lake Temple on March 16, 1956. She taught elementary school for a year before starting her family.

Sylvia and Charlie lived in the Salt Lake area and then moved to Pendleton, Oregon in 1959. They returned to Utah in 1962, building a home on Charlie’s family’s farm in Hunter. Sylvia loved her home and her view of the mountains from her yard. She was a proficient quilter and seamstress. She made stuffed animals that were sold for many years at Mormon Handicraft, using the proceeds to support her sons on missions. Sylvia’s brownies, pickles and breads were favorites with many on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley. She was a long-time member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

She loved the theatre, participating as an actress, scenery painter, director and stage mother. Sylvia wrote many award-winning roadshows. She directed, and performed in, many plays in her stake and in community theatre.

Sylvia and Charlie were missionaries at the Bountiful Regional Center, called to teach wards and stakes how to produce plays. She served as a temple worker and also as a teacher in all the Latter Day Saint auxiliaries. Sylvia and Charlie were called as specialists to serve at Latter Day Saint June Conferences to teach others how to produce road shows. They also served as ESL Instructors at the El Dorado Branch of the Hunter Central Stake. Sylvia is survived by her four children: Scott (Dawnetta), Spencer (Patsy), Maria (Dave), Stephanie (Rob). She had 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
