VelDean Kirk passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 14, 2020. Although her death is a great loss for those who knew her, she lived a full and happy life. She will be mourned, but more so celebrated and remembered for the many ways in which she touched the lives of those who knew her.
Born April 30, 1932 in Hollywood, California to Frank Lynn and Velma McCallister, VelDean was the eldest of two girls. The family moved to Richfield, Utah while she was a young child, and later relocated to Salt Lake City. On June 6, 1949, VelDean married the love of her life Nick Kirk. Together they settled down in Kearns, Utah and started a family. She and Nick enjoyed many years of camping and fishing with their family and lifelong friends Jack and Shirly Bernardo. The couple made many memories together and started many traditions that will continue in their absence.
Professionally, she worked for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The 30 years she spent working there was truly one of her proudest accomplishments. You could always get her talking about the time she spent there and the people she worked with.
Like her name, VelDean was utterly unique. Anyone who spent time around her would agree. She was very opinionated and would never shy away from expressing her opinion. Even the times she knew her opinion might not be popular (or even correct), in true political fashion, she would argue her point, and rarely admit defeat. At times it could drive a person crazy, but we all loved her for it. None of us can predict how much the little things a person does in life can mean to us; little things like a compliment... a loving word from a Grandmother... or even a spirited argument. But it is those little moments in life that live forever in our memory, and truly define a person’s legacy. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband Nick; daughters Karan and Debra; and great-grandson Kobe.
Survived by her children Barb Webb (Bruce), Mike Kirk (Jackie), and Tami Stewart as well as Tom Speetzen; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday, November 20, 2020, 2:00 p.m., at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1950 East, Salt Lake City, Utah.
