Velois Atkins 1928 ~ 2013 Velois Ruth Monson Atkins passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Sunday, November 3, 2013 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born October 5, 1928 to Harley and Leah Smith Monson, of Smithfield, Utah, the eldest of six children. She grew up in Cache county and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Elementary Education. Married Harold Wilford Atkins June 12, 1952 in the Logan Temple. They made their home in West Valley City and had six children. She taught school for 28 years, the majority of them spent teaching 1st grade at Carl Sandburg Elementary. She retired in 1991. She was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings. Two months after retiring, she and her husband served for 12 months in the Tallahasee, Florida mission (August 1991- August 1992). She was a loving and strong woman and enjoyed spending time with her family. Prior to her illness she enjoyed attending "Grandma's Club" and meetings for the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She had a passion for crocheting and made many beautiful afghans over the years which she shared with family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband; son Blake; sister Janet Monson; and parents. Survived by her children: Geri Lynn Allison, Steven (Sherie) Atkins, Le Ann (Gary) Robertson, Kelly (Todd) Warren, Shawn Atkins; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Wentworth at Willow Creek for their care over the past two years, and the staff at Symbii Hospice for their care over the past few weeks. Private family graveside services will be held Friday, November 8, 2013, 12:00 noon at Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South. A viewing will be held Friday, 11-11:45 a.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at http://www.alz.org/join_the_caust_donate.asp.
