Our dear sweet mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Vene Dee Nelson Turnbull, died peacefully in Bountiful on March 21, 2014, at the age of 102. She was born February 29, 1912, in Ferron, the youngest of ten children born to James and Mary Olsen Nelson. Dee attended schools in Ferron and Mt. Pleasant. She suffered a rapid and progressive hearing loss during her teen years and spent the remainder of her lifetime dealing with deafness, but she became an accomplished lip reader and enjoyed a very happy and productive life. Dee married Mitchell Mike Turnbull in Standardville on October 16, 1931, and the marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. They lived in several Carbon County mining communities before settling in East Carbon in the late 1940s. It is there they raised their son and daughter. Dee was an active member of the LDS Church. One of her greatest joys was teaching in Relief Society and working with young women in the MIA and 4-H. Always an excellent cook, Dee was praised for her bread, biscuits, and pies. She prepared meals for the single school teachers in Sunnyside, in exchange for rent; and baked pies which Mike served in the Confectionary he managed in Standardville. Mike and Dee enjoyed serving an LDS Mission in Australia from 1970 - 1972, which was their dream come true. They later retired to St. George to enjoy the warmer climate in that area. Mike passed away in 1988, after 57 years of marriage, and Dee later moved to Bountiful where she remained until her death. Dee was a very loving and caring person and earned respect and admiration from everyone she met. Dee is survived by son, Gary (Geri) Turnbull, of Bountiful; daughter, Lynn (Don) Butler, of Mendon; granddaughters, Patricia Pickett of California, D'Lynn DuVall of Delaware, Debra Morris of Kansas, Denise Johnson of Providence, and Diana Warren of Mapleton; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Michael Turnbull; parents; and nine siblings. The family extends heartfelt thanks to North Canyon Care Center and Care Givers Support Network of Kaysville for loving care provided over the past several months.
