Verlo Edward Ottley "Steward of the Soil" Verlo Ottley, 85 years old. A leg of wood and a heart of gold. He was born on July 14, 1930 to Sidney J. and Alice Ottley. He was a little rascal from the very beginning with a sense of humor that made everyone fall in love with him. He married his sweetheart, Joyce on December 27, 1949. Verlo served in the 5th regiment combat team in the Korean War between 1951 and 1952. He had frontline duty and personally saw the horror of war, but proudly served his country. Verlo always flew the flag from his home in Taylorsville. After his service, he and Joyce became farmers in South Jordan. Unfortunately, during that time Verlo lost his leg in a farming accident. After that, with his outgoing personality he worked in sales. He always loved farming and eventually became an entrepreneurial Vermiculturist. He successfully ran Verlo Ottley Nightcrawlers for 40 years. Verlo was an adventurer and loved to travel. He and his wife went on several cruises and saw much of the world. In his younger days he raced cars and was always a big NASCAR enthusiast. Verlo had a very musical family and a beautiful singing voice. He and Joyce created a family entertainment group named "The Singing Ottleys" and they performed widely. He raised his family on hard work and music, leaving a "living legacy to the leader of the band." He loved his family and they loved him. He was a lifetime member of the LDS Church.
